Cowboys take title and Cowgirls finish second at Sam Houston State cross country meet

HUNTSVILLE – McNeese State’s cross country teams made their final pre-conference appearance a good one here Saturday as the men finished first and the women second in the Sam Houston State invitational.


    The Cowboys scored 52 points for the men’s title and the Cowgirls totaled 75 points for second place in their division.


    “It was a good performance,” McNeese coach Brendon Gilroy said.  “This was out first look at several conference teams and I was pleased with the way we performed.”


    David Rooney led the Cowboys in their four mile race with a 19:29 clocking for fifth place.  Jordan Neil ran sixth, Johnathan Koenck was ninth and Kenneth Pierce finished 14th.  Neil posted a 19:30, Koenck ran 19:38 and Piece ran 19:54.


    Also for the Cowboys, Jarrett LeBlanc ran 20:22 for 20th place.


    North Texas finished second in the team totals with 65 points while Houston Baptist had 75, Texas A&M B and Sam Houston 93 each, Houston 97, Nicholls State 214 and Hutson-Tillotson 228.


    Christi Citizen led the Cowgirls with a 10th place showing while Alvy Garragher was 16th, Candice McCormick 17th and Lyndsey Monteith 18th.  Citizen ran 14:45 for four K while Garragher was clocked at 15:05, McCormick 15:09 and Monteith at 15:20.


    Houston won the women’s team title with 18 points and was followed by McNeese, North Texas with 93 points, Sam Houston 96, Houston Baptist 97, Nicholls State 124, Northwestern State 215 and Hutson-Tillotson 231.
