Tulane Cross Country Turns In Top Times At Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. - Every runner for the Tulane men's and women's cross country teams turned in season-best times Saturday at the Auburn Tiger Invitational, with the Tulane women placing 12th and the men coming in 23rd. Senior Aubrey Phillips paced the Green Wave in the 5K women's race with a time of 17:54, while Kyle Estevez turned in a time of 26:54.

Phillips came in 54th overall for the women, followed by Rebecca Coady in 68th (18:06), and Julia Whitrock in 72nd (18:09). Freshman Johanna Gretschel was the fourth runner for Tulane earning 88 points in 109th with a time of 18:45. She was followed by Caitlin Hornbeck (169th, 20:14) and Jessica Dallager (175th, 20:30).

Every Tulane runner improved on their previous 5K time, led by Phillips improvement of 1:18. Whitrock's time was also 1:18 better than her time at the Brooks Memphis Twilight. Gretschel topped her previous 5K time by 1:17. Coady and Dallager, each shaved 53 seconds off their top times this season.

Kendra Schaaf of Washington won the women's orange race with a time of 15:46. Washington won the team title in the orange race. The field ran in two separate races, designated "orange" and "blue" due to the vast number of participants.

On the men's side, Estevez came in 166th, earning 126 points. Brian Lozes was the second Wave runner across the line, two seconds back in 169th. He was followed by Mike Mainguy (175th, 27:09). Freshman Jordon Holtzman placed 198th (28:17), with Max Miller (199, 28:17) and Sean Meisler (200th, 29:25) tightly packed behind him. Rounding out the Tulane entries was senior Eric Sweeney, in 207th in 29:07.

Estevez's time was 2:04 better than his previous top time this season, set last week at the LSU Tiger Festival. Lozes improved by 2:28 over his best, at the Memphis Twilight. Mainguy sliced his top time by 2:03, while the rest of the Tulane runners also all topped their previous bests by at least 1:03.

Auburn's Elkanah Kibet won the orange race in 22:16 as the Tigers took home the team award.

The Green Wave will have a weekend off before returning to action on October 18 at the Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
