McNeese hosts the state's first collegiate indoor track and field meet of the season

McNeese State claimed six first places as the Cowboys and Cowgirls put on the state's first collegiate indoor track and field meet of the season on Saturday.
The Cowboys produced three first place efforts and the Cowgirls the same number in the meet that was attended by athletes from five different universities.
Southeastern Louisiana claimed team titles in both divisions, the Lions scoring 158 points to win the men's title and the Lady Lions 124.
Southern was second in the men's meet with 141 points while the Cowboys scored 104.5 and Southern of New Orleans had 39.
Southern was also second in the women's division with 108 points with Nicholls getting 73 and McNeese State 71.
"I thought that the meet went very well," McNeese coach and meet director Brendon Gilroy said. "It was good to get the cobwebs off. It was a chance for the athletes and our coaching staff to see just where we were and where we have to go.
"I want to thank the officials for helping to put the meet on and also for the supporters who came out and donated toys for the less fortunate."
Entry to the meet was a new toy or $5 and all of the toys will be given to KPLC-TV for its local Christmas toy drive.
The expected race for a sub-four minute mile did not materialize. The runners expected to contend, including former NCAA champion Vincent Rono, were no-shows.
Gilroy said that he was informed just before the meet that the four runners would not be in attendance.
John Jamail in the shot put, Jordan Niel in the 3000 meter run and Timothy Guillory in the triple jump won events for the Cowboys while Cowgirl champions were Amy Guinn in the 3000 meters, DeAnn Washington in the shot put and Erin Huckabay in the high jump.
Jamail came close to a personal best with a 55-6 1/2 toss in the shot while newcomers Niel ran an 8:37.61 in the 3000 and Guillory went 45-8 1/2 in the triple jump.
Guinn ran a 10:54.43 in the 3000, Washington went 12.4 meters in the shot put and Huckabay had a 5-2 high jump.
The Cowboys showed a strong front in the 3000 meters with a one through five place showing. Neil won the event and was followed by Kenneth Pierce, Ryan Barrow, Mark Hoey and Alasdair Russell.
Also for the Cowboys, Jonathan Koenck finished third in the mile run at 4:39.34, Michael Washington was second in the 400 meter dash at 51.64 and Freddie Hannie was third in the weight throw with a toss of 46-6 1/2.For the Cowgirls, Amy Aguillard was second in the pole vault at 11-6 and Julie Buller was third at 10-0 and Christi McRae was third in the 200 meters at 27.74.

A couple of former McNeese athletes competing unattached won events as Jimmie Heath took the pole vault at 16-0 and Jon Fagan won the high hurdles with a 7.60 clocking.
