LSU Press Release:

LSU Track & Field Starts Season Strong with LSU Relays

The Tigers and Lady Tigers also featured six silver medalists in their events Saturday afternoon, including Goule (54.62) in the 400 meters, Sylvester (11.74) in the 100 meters, junior Shana-Gaye Tracey (59.27) in the 400 hurdles (59.27), sophomores Joshua Thompson (14.23w) in the 110 hurdles and Doren Welch (146-10) in the javelin and freshman Fitzroy Dunkley (48-6 ¾) in the triple jump.

“It was a tough day for us to get much done as a team with the weather like it was. We fought through some showers here and there, which made for some really heavy air here today,” Shaver said. “But we were able to still get a few things done and feel a little bit better about where we are as we get into the meat of our schedule.

“We’re really looking forward to the Texas Relays next weekend. I expect our athletes to be better focused mentally as we really step up our level of competition. It’s always a lot of fun for our teams.”

The Tigers and Lady Tigers are set to make their annual trip to Austin, Texas, next weekend to compete against a world-class field at the 86th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays running March 27-30 at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas. They will then travel to Los Angeles, Calif., to compete at the UCLA Dual Meet being held April 6 at Drake Stadium.

Juniors Leigh-Ann Naccari and Laura Aleman wrapped up Friday’s events for the Lady Tigers by running personal records in the final of the women’s 5,000 meters as Naccari eclipsed her previous best my more than six seconds with a run of 17:42.22 for fourth place and Aleman broke her previous best by five seconds with a run of 18:11.54 for seventh place.

Junior William Wiesler then ended the night with his first collegiate victory as he took the men’s 5,000-meter title in 15:07.86 while slashing nearly 40 seconds off of his previous outdoor PR in the event. Wiesler had run a career-best of 15:46.35 in the 5k outdoors entering Friday’s race as he took home his first title as an LSU Tiger.

Fellow junior Roger Cooke also ran a personal best in the men’s 5,000 meters as he took third place overall with a run of 15:25.26 in the final event of the evening.

BATON ROUGE – Seniors Charlene Lipsey and Laura Carleton opened their outdoor season by running two of the NCAA’s fastest times in a 1-2 finish in the 1,500 meters and 10 athletes set outdoor personal records in Friday’s opening day of competition at the LSU Relays being held this weekend at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

In the wake of her bronze-medal-winning third-place finish in the 800-meter final at the 2013 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships two weeks ago, Lipsey opened her outdoor campaign Friday night with a strong performance in defending her 1,500-meter championship at the LSU Relays.

Lipsey raced to an NCAA-leading effort of 4 minutes, 21.78 seconds to take the tape ahead of Carleton in second place and emerge as the nation’s fastest 1,500-meter runner early in the 2013 outdoor season. Carleton followed with the NCAA’s No. 4-ranked performance early in the season at 4:24.00 to take the runner-up position.

Lipsey won the LSU Relays title in the 1,500 meters for the first time in her career with a season-opening time of 4:20.91 as a junior a year ago.

The Hempstead, N.Y., native is fresh off of an indoor season in which she claimed her fourth career All-America honor in the 800 meters with a career-best third-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She ran the second-fastest time indoors in program history at 2:02.47 in the national final to take home the NCAA Indoor bronze medal. Lipsey is poised to contend for her first NCAA Championship in the 800 meters this spring after taking home the NCAA Outdoor silver medal with a lifetime PR of 2:01.40 last season.

Carleton is also coming off a history-making indoor campaign of her own in 2013 as she became the first Lady Tiger in program history to be crowned the SEC Indoor Champion in the 5,000 meters.

Sophomore Philip Primeaux made it a clean sweep of 1,500-meter titles for LSU during Friday’s action as he smashed his personal record in the first heat with a winning run of 3:56.27, breaking his previous PR effort by more than three seconds as he ran 3:59.37 at the LSU Relays during his freshman season a year ago.

Fellow sophomores Barrett Miller and Philip Dempsey also ran personal bests in the 1,500 meters on Friday night as Miller followed Primeaux in third place at 3:58.38 and Dempsey trailed in 10th place at 4:02.27.

While her teammates were sweeping 1,500-meter titles on the track, junior All-America hopeful Denise Hintonset a personal best after stepping into the hammer circle for the first time in the 2013 outdoor season.

A two-time NCAA Indoor Championships qualifier in the 20-pound weight throw, Hinton wasted no time in cracking the Top 5 of the NCAA rankings this spring as she uncorked a throw of 195 feet, 11 inches on her very first toss of the outdoor season to claim the No. 5 ranking on the national list. She finished runner-up to the winning mark of 202-1 by Akron’s Brittany Funk also set during the first round of throws.

Not only did Hinton crack the Top 5 of the NCAA rankings with her season-opening performance, but she also moved up one spot into the No. 5 position on LSU’s all-time outdoor performance list in the hammer event while passing the career-best of 195-9 by former Lady Tiger All-SEC performer Kim Williams by just two inches.

Hinton entered Friday’s season opener with a personal best of 191-5 set during the Arizona State Tri-Meet on April 14 of her sophomore season in 2012.

Also leading the way in the field events during Friday’s opener at the LSU Relays were senior Lacey Sanchezand junior Brianne Bergeron as each set lifetime personal records with their pole vault performance.

Sanchez cleared consecutive heights of 12-10 and 13-1 ¾ on her first attempt as she opened her outdoor season with a second-place finish to the winning clearance of 13-5 ¾ by Arkansas State’s Stephanie Foreman. It strengthened her position as the No. 3-ranked pole vaulter outdoors in Lady Tiger history while eclipsing her previous lifetime best of 13-1 ½ set during the 2010 season.

Bergeron climbed into the No. 7 spot in the school rankings with a PR performance of her own after clearing a height of 11-8 on her third attempt en route to an 11th-place finish in the competition.

BATON ROUGE – Strong season-opening performances by junior Jasmin Stowers in the 100-meter hurdles andQuincy Downing in the 400-meter dash and a sweep of relay titles by the Lady Tigers paced 10 event winners for the LSU Track & Field teams during Saturday’s finale at the 2013 LSU Relays held at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

Stowers opened the outdoor season with her victory the women’s 100-meter hurdles as she took the tape ahead of senior teammate Shanekia Hall with a wind-legal run of 13.39 seconds to match her season-opening performance from a year ago. Hall followed in second place with an opening time of 13.52 in her first race of the outdoor season.

Stowers took to the track for the first time following her bronze-medal-winning third-place finish in the final of the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Championships two weeks ago.

Stowers, who has now earned four All-America honors in the sprint hurdles in her collegiate career, also led off the Lady Tigers in the 4x100-meter relay on Saturday as she teamed with senior Kimberlyn Duncan, junior Takeia Pinckney and junior Toshika Sylvester for a winning run of 44.03 in the their first appearance of the 2013 season.

It marked the first time that Stowers has run on LSU’s top team in the 4x100-meter relay in her three seasons as a Lady Tiger.

The Lady Tigers were dominant in their season opener in the sprint relay as Hinds Community College trailed more than two seconds back in second place with a time of 46.23.

“I haven’t run the relay much since high school, and handing off to somebody like Kim is something I’ve never experienced before,” Stowers said following the meet. “I was a little nervous about that. I was sprinting as hard as I could to get the stick to her. We’ve definitely got some improvements to make. We’re all looking forward to running again at Texas next week.”

Stowers actually matched her season-opening time in the 100 hurdles from a year ago when she ran a wind-aided 13.39 in the preliminary rounds at the Texas Relays while coming up just short of a spot in the finals.

“I feel more comfortable opening here (in the hurdles),” Stowers said. “I feel like I’ve got a better chance to run well next week because I ran here today. It’s a good starting point for me. I didn’t even make the final at Texas last year, so I’m really looking forward to that when we go back next week.”

The Lady Tigers swept sprint relay titles during Saturday’s action at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium as they added victories in both the 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relays in the finale.

Earning the victory in the 4x200 relay with a winning run of 1 minute, 34.29 seconds was LSU’s team of seniorLatoya McDermott, Duncan, senior Siedda Herbert and freshman Aliyah Davis. Herbert then returned to the track to lead off the Lady Tigers in the 4x400 relay as she teamed with junior Nikita Tracey, sophomoreMontenae Roye-Speight and junior Natoya Goule to run a season-opening time of 3:37.00.

After the Lady Tigers won the women’s 4x100 relay title, the Tigers opened the defense of their national championship in the 4x100 relay with a strong performance in their season opener on Saturday afternoon.

With sophomore All-American Aaron Ernest still recovering from a grueling indoor season, the Tigers took to the track with a foursome of senior long jump All-American Damar Forbes, freshman Darrell Bush, freshmanNethaneel Mitchell-Blake and junior Shermund Allsop lining up to the inside of the Tiger Olympians team of former LSU All-Americans Barrett Nugent, Tristan Walker, Kyron Blaise and Gabriel Mvumvure.

Forbes led off with a strong first leg before Bush and Mitchell-Blake got the baton to Allsop on the anchor in a dead heat with Mvumvure for the title. The Tigers crossed the finish line in 39.98 to finish runner-up to the winning run of 39.94 by Mvumvure and the Tiger Olympians.

The Tigers won their eighth NCAA title in the 4x100 relay as the team of Nugent, Ernest, Keyth Talley and Allsop sprinted to the seventh-fastest time in collegiate history at 38.38 in the national final a year ago.

“We got the stick around the track with both the men and the women, which was a primary goal of ours coming in,” said LSU head coach Dennis Shaver. “I thought the women executed the race very well today in their first time out. We’ve got some new people on it this year, and those returning are in a different spot on the relay than they were last year. The men were also pretty good today. Damar ran a great leadoff leg to sort of put our two freshmen in a good position. We’re excited that Aaron Ernest will be back in the mix when we go to Texas next week.”

While the Tigers came up a split-second short of taking the sprint relay crown, Downing returned the favor in the final of the men’s 400-meter dash as he battled Olympic relay bronze medalist Ade Alleyne-Forte of the Tiger Olympians for his first collegiate victory outdoors in the one-lap race.

Downing beat Alleyne-Forte to the finish line with a season-opening time of 46.94 as Alleyne-Forte took the silver medal in 47.05. Downing’s 46.94 ranks No. 4 in the NCAA’s early-season rankings for 2013.

Downing owns a lifetime best of 46.18 in the event that he set in the NCAA quarterfinals during his freshman season a year ago en route to a berth in the national semifinals of the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Downing is also a two-time All-American during his collegiate career as a member of LSU’s 4x400-meter relay team.

After opening up the outdoor season with a runner-up finish in the 1,500 meters on Friday night, Lady Tiger senior Laura Carleton scored a victory in her first 800-meter race outdoors this season while setting a lifetime PR of 2:11.08 in the first of four heats of the women’s event.

And just one week after smashing his lifetime best with an NCAA-leading mark of 197-1 in winning the discus at the Louisiana Classics meet, Tiger sophomore Rodney Brown won his second discus title in as many starts on Saturday afternoon. Brown took the title with a series-best effort of 186-2 in the fifth round of throws to surge past Southeastern Louisiana’s Jeff Milliron (178-3) in the event.

Following Brown in the final standings were senior Daniel Obioha in fifth place with a seasonal-best throw of 163-7 and sophomore Jeremy Tuttle in seventh place with a personal-best throw of 161-6.

Other event winners during Saturday’s finale at the LSU Relays included Pinckney (11.61) in the 100-meter dash, Tracey (59.18) in the 400-meter hurdles and junior Keri Emanuel (19-7 ½) in the long jump.

Tulane Press Release:

BATON ROUGE, La. - Tulane's track and field squads performed solidly against top-notch competition this weekend by posting a total of 15 top ten finishes at the LSU Relays on Friday and Saturday in Baton Rouge, La., including a first place finish by the men's sprint medley squad.

Tulane's men's sprint medley squad finished in first place on Friday with a time of 3:27.49. The quartet of seniorJon Frano, senior Albert Williams, junior Christopher Arechiga and sophomore Xavier Rush posted the fourth best sprint medley relay time in Tulane history.

"It is very exciting for the men's team to win an event like this," said Tulane director of track and field Eric Peterson. "We finished very low in the event last year at this meet. Obviously, the team is made up of different athletes. The impressive team is that Albert (Williams) stumbled dramatically out of the blocks, but he was able to regain his balance and got us off to a decent start. Collectively, they did a great job to come away with a victory. I know it was fun for them, but it was exciting for the whole team to watch them come out and get a win."

Also on Friday at the LSU Relays, sophomore Jessica Knierim bested her personal high in the pole vault by clearing 3.76 meters (12' 4"). Her jump is the second best in school history. The women's 1,600 spring medley relay team notched a fifth place finish with a time of 4:09.13. Junior Charlotte Manogue also posted a very respectable 5:05.75 in the 1,500 race. On the men's side, sophomore Geoffery Zelek crushed his previous career best time in the 5,000 race, finishing in 16:16.73.

"I think Jessica is on the verge of making a very significant breakthrough," added Peterson. "Every indication we have gotten from watching her at practice is that she is very close to figuring things out. I know she was happy with the result, and we know she is eager to test her abilities next weekend."

Freshman Jack White also impressed the coaches with his eighth place finish in the 1,500 meter relay with a time of 4:01.41.

During the bulk of the competition - held on Saturday - the Tulane women's track and field team posted six top ten finishes, including two top ten finishes from two women's relay squads. The 4 x 400 meter relay team composed of seniorsTiffanie SmithJamie Riles and Candice St. Etienne, along with junior Hilary Woods, notched a time of 3:47.96. They finished in front of every team other than the A and B teams from LSU. The Women's 4 x 100 meter relay squad of Woods, Smith, senior Jerica Banks and freshman Lilla McMillan posted a time of 47.26 for a sixth place finish. In the 400 meter hurdles, the women's team placed three in Smith, Adamson and St. Etienne. The trio finished in fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Smith nearly eclipsed her personal best of 1:02.18. JuniorCallie Turlington placed fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:47.08.

On the men's side of the team on Saturday, senior Brian Lozes notched a fourth place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:55.82. Fellow senior Max Yanker cleared 2.03 meters (6' 8") in the high jump, which was good enough for sixth place on the day. FreshmanAdam Yohanan performed well in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.74.

Tulane's men's 4 x 400m relay team of Arechiga, Frano, freshman John Mouton and sophomore Justyn Shackleford placed ninth by running the relay in 3:20.38.

"In general, we continued to improve as a team across the board from what we have been showing during the last couple of weeks," stated Eric Peterson. "With spring break next week, we are looking forward to being able to focus completely on training before we head to California for the Stanford Invitational."

Two states over, Tulane assistant coach for throws Gary England took freshman Cheyenne Swanson and sophomore Thomas Lynch to compete in the discus at the John Mitchell Alabama Relays. They were able to compete during their normally scheduled time before rain delayed the meet for hours. Swanson posted a new personal best with a throw of 38.71 meters (127' 0"), and Lynch notched a distance of 47.31 meters (155' 2").

"They are both progressing like we had anticipated," said England. "I'm happy with their performances today, and they should be too. We are on schedule and on point to represent Tulane at the conference meet."

The Greenies will head out west to compete in the Cal Multis and the Stanford Invitational next week.

Loyola Press Release:

(Baton Rouge, La.) Loyola University New Orleans Track and Field team took to Bernie Moore stadium at LSU on Saturday and set two more school records on the second day of the LSU Relays after setting two records yesterday.

The women’s 4x100 meter relay team set a school record by running a time of 50.83 which was .02 seconds faster than the 50.85 time they posted at the Louisiana Classics last weekend. The squad of Candace Johnson, Sarah Tortorich, Harley Augustine, and Alexandra Lain barely surpassed the time of last weekend. Harley Augustine replaced Etashat’e Hollins on the four person squad to help set the new record.

Elizabeth Gienger also clinched a new school record in the 3000 meter steeplechase as she posted a time of 13:16.95 in the event. She finished seventh in the race at the LSU Relays.

The men’s 4x100 meter relay team almost followed suit, but fell just short of a new school record as the four person team of Mark Robinson, Claude Nelson, Piero Ramirez, and Aleksander Matoski posted a time of 45.78 seconds. Nelson, Mario Ramirez, Piero Ramirez, and Robinson ran a time of 45.02 at the Louisiana Classics this past weekend which broke the previous school mark.

The Wolf Pack set two school records on day one of the LSU Relays. Paul Freese ran a 16:08.61 time in the 5,000 meter race to top a school record and Christina Guzman surpassed her own school record in the shot put with a 10.64 meter throw.

ULM Press Release:

Several Warhawks post top marks on final day of LSU Relays

BATON ROUGE, La. – The ULM track & field team recorded several top finishes Saturday on the final day of the LSU Relays at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

The day was highlighted by junior Martin Solomon’s second-place finish in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. Solomon – competing in the 400 hurdles for the first time this season -- clocked a Sun Belt-leading time of 52.80, which also marks the 10th best time in the NCAA East Region so far this season.

The Warhawks also had a solid showing in the men’s 400-meter dash with senior Dimitri Hampton finishing fifth in a time of 48.53 and freshman Nigel Cribbs finishing ninth in a time of 48.70. Both times cracked the top 25 in the NCAA East Region this season.

Freshman Cory Wesley finished second in the men’s long jump with a best leap of 23-6 (7.16m). Wesley continues to lead the Sun Belt and rank eighth in the NCAA East Region with a best jump of 24-0.25 (7.32m) on the season.

Senior Clint Broussard continued his solid outdoor season with a fourth-place finish in the men’s high jump. Broussard cleared 2.08 meters for the first time this season, but was unable to reach 2.12 meters in three attempts. He currently leads the Sun Belt and ranks 16th in the NCAA East Region in the high jump this season.

Sophomore Isaac Grieder made his outdoor season with a seventh-place finish in the men’s javelin. Grieder threw 185-11 (56.67m) on his first attempt of the day, the fourth best mark in the Sun Belt this season.
