LSU Track Maintains Top-5 Status in Coaches\' Polls

BATON ROUGE -- The LSU men\'s and women\'s track and field teams held on to their top five rankings in this week\'s Coaches\' Poll, while slipping slightly in the Trackwire 25 rankings, released Tuesday.


After two week\'s at No. 1 in the Trackwire standings the Tigers fell one spot to No. 2 this week, while maintaining their No. 3 ranking in the Coaches\' Poll.


SEC champion Arkansas bumped LSU out of the top spot with 59 points to the Tigers\' 45 points. Texas (42), Florida State (30) and Florida (29) round out Trackwire\'s top five.


The Coaches\' Poll has Arkansas and Texas knotted at No. 1 followed by LSU, Florida State and Wisconsin.


On the women\'s side, LSU slipped one spot to No. 5 in the Coaches\' Poll behind Texas, South Carolina, Nebraska and Stanford.


The Lady Tigers fell out of the top five in the Travkwire standings and sit in a two-way tie with Michigan at No. 7 with 25 points a piece.


The top five includes Texas (52), Stanford (44), Auburn (41), Nebraska (36) and Arizona State (35).


Individually, LSU has eight athletes and three relay teams listed among the nation\'s top 12.


Following an SEC title in the 400 meters over the weekend, sophomore sprinter Xavier Carter maintained his No. 1 ranking in the open quarter as well as the 200 meters.


Senior Kelly Willie sits just behind Carter at No. 2 in the 200 meters. He is also listed at No. 5 in the 60-meter dash.


Both Carter and Willie run on the Tigers\' 4x400 relay that is again ranked No. 1 in the country.


Heptathletes Darion Powell and Edwin Billot earned the nation\'s No. 7 and No. 9 rankings respectively. Billot returns to the individual rankings after winning the SEC title over the weekend.


In addition, the men\'s distance medley relay team climbed one spot to No. 8.


On the women\'s side, the Lady Tigers\' 4x400-meter relay highlights the standings with their No. 1 national ranking.


The relay is propelled by quartermilers Deonna Lawrence and Cynetheia Rooks who are ranked seventh and eight in the 400 meters, respectively.


In the short sprints, sophomore Kelly Baptiste is ranked fourth in both the 60 and 200 meters.


Sophomore Brooklynn Morris is also listed in the 200-meter standings at No. 7.
