NORMAN, Okla. – Triple jumper Wayne Douglas, Lawana Perkins in the women’s 800 meter run and the Lady Demons’ 4x440 yard relay team posted medal-winning performances Saturday to highlight Northwestern State’s efforts in the 2011 Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Douglas, a junior, covered 49-11 ¼ on his first attempt, good enough to finish second to the 51-0 ¼ by Jamal Peden of Stephen F. Austin. Third place Omar Barnes of Texas-Arlington was five inches behind Douglas, who was also second at last year’s Southland Outdoors.
Perkins, a senior, ran 2:15.05 to earn her spot on the medal stand. SFA senior Danielle Burchett won at 2:14.77 followed by Ashley Wright of Texas State, who nipped Perkins for the silver medal with a 2:15.01 time.
Perkins ran the third leg on the 4x440 yard relay, with Quina Griffin and Constance Seibles preceding her before Angelica Kotun, running her first-ever long relay due to an injury to Consuela Lindsy, brought the baton across in 3:51.15, third behind SFA (3:48.52) and Texas State (3:49.93).
Griffin narrowly missed another bronze medal when she finished fourth in the women’s 400 with a 56.43 time, just .08 shy of third. Lindsy had qualified for the final but scratched because of her injury.
Lady Demons Keona Jackson and Chantel Bratton finished 5-6 in the women’s shot put. Jackson threw 46-0 ¾ while Bratton’s best was a quarter-inch behind.
Demon teammates Kendal Taylor (22.08) and Trey Hatton (22.39) finished 6-7 in the 200. Hatton narrowly missed scoring in the 60, clocking 6.917 to the eighth-place 6.911 by Antonio Hebert of Southeastern Louisiana.
NSU’s P.J. Bennett(8.64) and Brent Giddens (8.95) ran 7-8 to score in the 60 meter hurdles.
The Demons’ 4x400 yard relay took seventh as D.J. Beyette, Dezrick Williams, Keenan Jackson and Travis Plumb posted a 3:21.60 time.
Both Northwestern teams finished 10th. The Lady Demons had 31.5 points while the Demons posted 18.
The SFA women won their fourth straight SLC Indoors title and the Texas-San Antonio men took their record seventh-straight indoor championship.
