McNeese State's Cowboys took the men's title and Nicholls State the women's crown during the running of the annual Cowboy Stampede cross country race here Saturday morning.
However, the individual titles were left to runners competing unattached, David Rooney of the Cowboys and Laura Carleton of LSU.
Alex Bruce-Littlewood led the Cowboys to the men's team title with a third place clocking of 19:20 over a four mile course at the Enos Derbonne sports complex. Teammates Alex Evans, Alex Kiptoo and Lewi Manirumva also finished in the top 10.
Evans posted a 19:41 clocking for seventh place, Kiptoo ran 19:48.94 for ninth place and Manirumva 20:07.00 for 10th place.
Also for the Cowboys, Andrew Kogutl was 17th at 20:54 and Brock Moreau 22nd at 20:59.
The Cowboys scored 27 points to beat runnerup LSU by six points. Tulane finished third with 71 points, UL Lafayette had 122 points, Nicholls Stsate 145 points, Southeastern Louisiana 149, Southern (BR) 203 and Southern (NO) 225.
Rooney, who is redshirting this cross country season for McNeese, was the men's champion with a course record 18:28 effort. Jarrett LeBlanc, also a McNeese redshirt, finished second with a 19:05 effort. Two other unattached runners – Humberto Gonzales and Johnathan Koenck – placed fourth and fifth with LSU's Cullen Doddy running sixth.
Nicholls State claimed the women's title with 51 points, nipping McNeese State by two points. Other scoring had LSU with 68 points, Tulane 69, Southeastern Louisiana 104, UL Lafayette 170, Southern (NO) 209 and Southern (BR) 233.
Carleton, who is a native of Lake Charles and who is going through a redshirt season for LSU, took the women's individual crown with a 16:50 effort over the 5K distance.
McNeese's Fionnuala Ross ran second with a 17:03 time while teammate Amy Talbot was third at 17:31. Nicholls' lead runner was Jesdsica McLeod with 17:52 for fifth place.
Also for the Cowgirls, Corissa Storms placed 16th at 18:41, Angelina Covinggton was 17th at 18:47, Taylor DeLaRosa wasd 20th at 18:58, Lauren Cooper was 23rd at 19:05, Allison Crawford 24th at 19:07 and Kaitlyn Jeter 30tgh at 19:38.
“I thought that both teams ran a very good race,” said McNeese head coach Brendon Gilroy, “especially since we had that quick turnaround as we had run at SFA on Monday.”

McNeese Cowboy Stampede - High Schools
Midland's Michael Primeaux and Sam Houston High's Sam Pavlovich claimed individual titles during the running of the high school division of the McNeese Cowboy Stampede cross country race Saturday.
Primeaux covered the 5K distance in 16:33 to win the boys title and Pavlovich went 19:23 over the same distance to take the girls crown.
Barbe High won the boys' team title with 95 points wile Pavlovich led Sam Houston to the girls title, the team scoring 57 points.
Blair Henderson of St. Louis High was second in the boys race with a 17:11.0 while Katie McKay of Benton placed second in the girls' division at 20:15 and Kellie Webb of Barbe was third at 20:48.
Other team scoring for the boys had Anacoco with 96 points, Midland 111, Benton 123, St. Louis 134, Little Cypress-Mauriceville 140, Choudrant 164, Sulphur 201, Sam Houston 215 and A. S. Ellender 222.
Benton was the runnerup in the girls' bracket with 59 points followed by Barbe with 75, Choudrant and Anacoco with 114 each, Lacassine 139, Bell City 162, Iowa 178 and Glenmora 206.
