EUGENE, Ore. - Louisiana Tech jumper Chelsea Hayes shattered her own school record as the New Orleans native placed ninth in the long jump at the USA Track and Field Championships late Sunday at historic Heyward Field on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene.
Hayes' mark of 21-5.25 (6.53m) topped her own school record mark of 21-4 (6.50m) set at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 26. She finished ninth out of 18 competitors, edging out Oklahoma's Ti'Anca Mock by an inch.
A senior this past outdoor season, Hayes still has one year of eligibility during indoor season and is appealing for a fifth-year of eligibility in order to compete during the 2012 outdoor season for Louisiana Tech.
