Chelsea Hayes Finishes Eighth in Long Jump at NCAA Indoor Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Chelsea Hayes jumped 20-7 and scored a point for Louisiana Tech as she finished eighth as competition began at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday in College Station.

With the eighth place finish, Hayes is expected to earn all-America honors, which will be announced Monday by the US Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). She will be the first all-American from Louisiana Tech since 2007.

Hayes entered the national meet ranked 11th of the 17 competitors but out-jumped athletes from Arizona State, Clemson, Kansas State, Nebraska and Wichita State that entered the week ranked above her.

A native of New Orleans, Hayes scored the first team point for Louisiana Tech in at least three years.

Her eighth-place finish in the NCAA Championships concludes the 2011 indoor season for LA Tech. The 2011 outdoor season is set to begin on March 25-26 in Baton Rouge at the LSU Relays.
