FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Louisiana Tech's distance medley relay quartet of Alwayne Green, Wade MaGaha, Jermaine Morris and Matt Wolfeshattered the school record by five seconds and stormed past LSU while Jonathan Keys recorded the third-best triple jump mark in school history on the final day of competition at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville.
The DMR team ran 9:56.98 breaking the school record of 10:01.54 set last year and was highlighted by the sophomore Wolfe running the anchor leg. A day after running the fastest mile time by any Tech runner since 1989, Wolfe ran 4:09.30 in the 1,600m anchor leg of the relay (1,600m is 99.4 percent the length of one mile) to push Tech to a fourth place finish, two spots and two seconds better than LSU.
Alwayne Green ran a 3:04.28 split in the opening 1,200m leg before Wade MaGaha ran a 49.49 split in the 400m leg. Jermaine Morris took the handoff and ran the 800m leg in 1:53.92 before Wolfe dominated the anchor leg, posting the third-fastest split of the 10 teams competing.
Meanwhile in the triple jump, Keys fell short of a personal best mark by half an inch as he jumped 50-4 to finish second overall at the meet. Keys, a redshirt junior during the indoor season, topped Kentucky's Steve Crouse by nine inches and only Florida State's Phillip Young bested Keys with a mark of 50-11.
In the men's 200m dash, Trey Hadnot ran a personal-best time of 21.75 to finish 36th overall while Dennis Richardson ran 21.98 for a personal record time of his own, placing 43rd. Josh Goree, the 2010 WAC Freshman of the Year, ran 22.00 and placed 44th.
In the women's 200m, Chelsea Hayes continued to excel on the track as she ran a personal record time of 24.47 to place 38th, edging Illinois' Melissa Bates by six thousandths of a second. Jesseka Jones palced 60th with a time of 24.88.
In the women's invitational triple jump, Quatisha Williams finished 14th with a mark of 39-8.5.
In the shot put, Micarra Vassell threw 43-5.75 to finish 12th while Marcella LeBlanc threw 40-4.25 to finish 17th.
Tech returns to the track on Feb. 24-26 for the WAC Indoor Championships with the women's program looking to win its sixth conference title in seven years.
