LAKE CHARLES, La. -- The LSU men's and women's cross country teams each claimed second-place finishes Saturday at the McNeese Cowboy Stampede.
The McNeese State men's team defended their home course, winning with a total of 18 points. LSU came in second with 74 points. UT-Arlington took home the women's team title with 38 points, finishing ahead of LSU which totaled 63 points. "The men had a really good score today," said cross country coach Mark Elliott. "Hopefully we can continue making progress as the season continues." Senior Richard Chautin led the way once again for the men's team, finishing in third place with a time of 19 minutes, 27 seconds. "Richard ran really well," Elliott said. "He ran against some very good competition and had a great performance. He is looking really good this season." Without several runners, the Tiger women still managed to come up with a great performance. "Considering the fact that I sat out two of our better runners," said Elliott, "I thought we had a great team effort." Junior Laura Carelton collected another top 10 finish. The Lake Charles native finished in third place, clocking a 18:06.10. "Laura is consistently getting better," Elliott said. "I am very pleased with her effort today." Sophomore Charlene Lipsey had her best race of the season. After finishing outside the top 10 in the first two meets of the year, Lipsey collected a fifth place finish Saturday with a time of 18:14.06. "Charlene ran extremely well," said Elliott. "I was very happy to see her have a great performance today." The men's and women's cross country teams travel to Fayetteville, Ark., next weekend for the Chili Pepper Invitational.
