BISHOP, Ga. - It was the opening meet of the 2010 season, but the Tulane Cross Country program opened their second season under head coach Eric Peterson with a solid showing at the Georgia Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 4).

"I believe that we've gotten off to a very good start (this season)," said Tulane head coach Eric Peterson. "When you have as many athletes run lifetime best, and several others run just off their lifetime bests, that to me is an indication that our kids have obviously worked hard over the summer to prepare for this season. They all did a good job today of starting strong and gave us a good place to build from as we move forward into the season."

The season opener was a showcase for the returning runners, with only one freshman competing. Junior Brian Lozes led the men's team with a 25th place finish in a career-best 25:42.52 on the eight-kilometer course, whileMax Miller and Jordan Vance each captured personal-best times. Miller placed 48th and had nearly a one-minute improvement from his top time in 2009. Vance outdid his personal-best time by over one minute with a time of 27:32.19.

"Our men's squad is starting to understand how to race a little bit better at the collegiate level," said Peterson. "Brian had been a good leader on this team. But, today we saw some really good efforts from Max, Jordan and Mike. They worked well as a group, raced well from an individual standpoint and all experienced a lot of improvement. That is obviously something we want to see from them, but they still can make strides in staying engaged in the race and begin to close the gap a little."

The host Bulldogs won the men's event with 24 points, Mississippi State was second (37 points) followed by Georgia Tech (70) and Mercer (146). The Green Wave (165) finished sixth overall, just one point behind Atlanta Technical College (164).

The women's team watched as senior Rebecca Coady and redshirt junior Julia Whitrock paced the squad with solid opening showings. The duo ran with the lead pack the entire race, with the top two overall finishers distancing themselves from the pack late in the race. Coady posted a time of 18:13.05 to finish fourth overall and Whitrock missed her PR by just six seconds, crossing the finish line 18:15.26, in sixth place overall.

"On the women's side, Julia and Rebecca did a very good job of leading our team," Peterson said. "They went out with the lead pack, managed the race well and finished strong. I was pleased with the effort made by Johanna, Katherine and Emmi. They were conscious that we want to keep the gap between our first (runner) and the rest of the pack as small as possible and they worked hard at doing that today."

Katherine Crabtree bester her previous best mark by almost 25-seconds with a 5K time of 19:11.10, while Jessica Dallager clipped off 35-seconds from her career-best time, finishing in 19:56.69.

Georgia also won the women's event with a score of 27 points, followed by Mississippi State with 54 points and Tulane with 77 points. Georgia Tech (103), Mercer (121), Young Harris College (185) and Clark Atlanta University (206) rounded out the women's team standings.

The Green Wave will have two weeks to get ready for their next competition, which will arrive in the form of the Crimson Classic on September 18. The meet will be competed in Tuscaloosa, Ala. at the Harry Pritchett Running Park on the University of Alabama campus.
