Green, Rew, Walker sparkle for NSU at LSU meet

BATON ROUGE -- Michael Green enhanced his national ranking, Trecey Rew extended her school shot put record and Justin Walker won the men's 100 meter dash to highlight Northwestern State's efforts at the LSU Alumni Gold track and field meet that wrapped up Saturday evening.

While Rew added to her school mark, she couldn't improve on her No. 5 national ranking. On her first try of the day, Rew threw 54-11 1/2, two inches past the school mark she set at the Texas Relays two weeks earlier. She carried the lead into the fifth round before Illinois' Aja Evans unleashed a winning 55-9 mark, four inches past her 2010 best that had ranked third nationally.

Rew, who fouled on four of her last five shot put tries while gunning for an even bigger throw, also took second in the discus with a 158-4 throw.

Green posted a season's best 46.47 while finishing third in the Gold Division 400 meter dash, outrun only by Michael Mathieu (45.56) of the Bahamas national team and LSU's Armanti Hayes (46.25). Green's time was faster than the country's 17th-best mark entering the weekend and was a full second better than his 2010 best, but trailing his personal record 46.13 at the 2009 Southland Conference championships. It was a half-second off the Demons' school mark of 45.9 by Andrei Moore in 1976.

Walker ran a 10.61 into the wind, shy of his fastest time of the spring (10.43 last week) but good enough to add to 100 meter dash wins at McNeese and Lamar. He edged Andrew Riley of Illinois (10.62) and Tyronne Halstead (10.65) of Team Canada.

P.J. Bennett of Northwestern finished fourth in the men's 110 meter hurdles, clocking 14.77 into the wind.

Demon freshman Joshua Commiato cleared 6-10 1/4 for fifth in the high jump. Lawana Perkins ran fifth for the Lady Demons in the 800 with a 2:19.71 performance.

Michael Batts gave the Demons a sixth place with a 47.98 time in the 400. Carmen Wallace ran seventh in the women's 400 meter hurdles, but her time was not available Saturday due to a results malfunction.

NSU freshman Wayne Douglas was seventh in the long jump (22-1 3/4) and triple jump (47-0 3/4).

The Lady Demons' 4x100 relay foursome of Angelica Kotun, Shamaigun VanBuren, Constance Seibles and Anna Forest ran a season-best 46.22 time but finished eighth. Keyera Thomas was eighth in the women's high jump (5-4 1/4).

Northwestern competes next weekend at the Drake Relays, then hosts the NSU Invitational on May 1 at the Walter Ledet Track Complex.
