Michael Dyer Wins Southland's Mile Race

NORMAN, Ok.-- McNeese State's men's and women's Indoor Track and Field teams both placed seventh here Saturday at the Southland Conference Championship which were held at the Mosier Indoor Track on the campus of Oklahoma.

Michael Dyer was the highlight of the day for McNeese State as he won the mile race, defeating three-time defending champion Francis Kasagule of Lamar. Dyer completed the race with a time of 4:12.52. Kasagule led for most of the race but Dyer passed and two other runners passed him in the last 15 meters. Dyer won the race by 18 tenths of a second over UTSA's Albert Cardenas who had a time of 4:12.70.

Dyer also placed second in the 800 meter run with a 1:53.55, three tenths of a second over champion Dwight Robinson of UT-Arlington who had a time of 1:53.52. 

David Rooney placed second in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:23.63 and Johathon finished fifth with a time of 8:34.64. 

Other top finishers for the Cowboys had Thomas Canchola placing fourth in the shot put with a throw of 52' 3 1/4" and Charles Jacson placed sixth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.85. Jordan Neil placed sixth in the mile (4:16.05) and Jonathon Koenck placed eighth (4:16.73). Koench finished fifth in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:34.64.

Any Guinn was the runner-up in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:05.33 and placed fourth in the mile run with a time of 5:04.35. The Cowgirls had two top finishers in the shot put in Ashlee Smith who placed seventh with a throw of 43' 11 1/4". La'Shantena Rounds placed tenth with a throw of 42' 1 1/2". Amber Kelly placed 15th with a throw of 39' 9 3/4".
