David Rooney and La'Shantena Rounds Set School Records At Southland Indoor Championships

NORMAN, Ok.-- McNeese State's women's Indoor Track and Field team is in fourth place with 22 points following Friday's events at the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the Mosier Indoor Track Facility on the campus of Oklahoma. The men's team is in eighth place with 13 points.

Stephen F. Austin is the team leader in the women's standings with 62.5 points followed by Texas State with 34, UTSA with 28 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rounds out the top 5 with 19 points.

UTSA is the leader in the men's standings with 47.5 points with UTA with 37 in second. Southeastern La. is in third place with 28, Sam Houston is in fourth place with 22 points and Stephen F. Austin is in fifth place with 25.5 points.

David Rooney and La'Shantena Rounds both placed second in their respective events while setting school records. Rooney finished second in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:25.8, breaking his own record of 14:49.08 he set in 2009. Rounds placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 56' 53/4" also breaking the school record she set this year with a toss of 55' 10 1/2". Ashlee Smith placed third in the event with a throw of 55' 31/2".

Other finishers for the Cowboys and Cowgirls on Friday was a fourth place finish by Andrea Myers in the high jump. Myers had a jump of 5' 5". Jared Crafton placed fifth in the men's weight throw with a toss of 57' 5 1/2". The women's distance medley placed sixth with a 12:40.24 clocking while the Cowboys finished ninth with a 10:39.59 time. Kevin Laughlin placed 16th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:54.17.

Saturday's events begin at 8:30 a.m. with the conclusion of the heptathlon events. The field events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with opening ceremonies scheduled for 1:15 p.m. and the running events set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
