Most coaches never get the opportunity to coach an athlete who can claim that they are the best athlete in the nation. After Saturday's LSU High School Qualifier, Scotlandville head coach Allen Whitaker has coached two in the last years thanks to junior Ferzell Shepard's jump of 24-0.25.
Coincidentally, before last Saturday's meet, Shepard wasn't even the best long jumper on the Scotlandville team. That distinction belonged to senior Broderick Davis, who jumped 24-0 at the December 10th FasTrak Athletix Indoor Challenge in Houston.
Shepard's jump moved his teammate to No. 3 in the nation.
In this interview, we talk to Coach Whitaker about two of the nation's best--as well as his former No. 1 jumper--Oklahoma's Brandon Green, who earned All-American honors in the triple jump as a freshman. Whitaker coach Green his senior year in high school at Ruston.
