Cowboys win season opening indoor track and field meet

A near record from David Rooney in the 3000 meter run and a total of eight first place efforts highlighted McNeese State's performance Friday during the running of the Cowboys own invitational indoor track and field meet.

Rooney, a sophomore from Ireland, came within a second of breaking the school record as he strolled in with an 8:23:86 clocking.  The record of 8:22.14 was set by Trevor Foolkes in 1996.

He led four other Cowboys across the finish line as Jonathan Koenck, Jordan Neil, Jarrett LeBlanc and Ryan Barrow ran second through fifth.

Rooney's win, which was by 16 seconds,   was just one of five first place efforts for the men which took second place with 136.5 points.  Southeastern Louisiana was first with 184.5 points while South Alabama ran third at 78.5, Sam Houston State was fourth at 63.5 and Grambling finished with 33 points.

In the women's division, McNeese claimed the team title with 129 points followed by Southeastern Louisiana with 107 points, South Alabama with 99 points, Grambling 84 and Sam Houston State 75.

Joining Rooney as event winners for the Cowboys were Ronald Stine in the 200 meter dash, Torian Lindsey and Donovan Anderson in the 400 meter dash and the 4x400 meter relay team of Anderson, Michael Washington, Lindsey and Stine.

Stine won the 200 meters in 23.16, Lindsey and Anderson shared first place in the 400 meters at 52.31 and the relay team posted a 3:27.97 effort.

For the Cowgirls, champions were Kayla Fontenot in the 55 meter hurdles, Paige Lynch in the 55 meter dash, Aisling Casey in the one mile run and La'Shantena Rounds in the weight throw.

Fontenot, who also had a third place in the long jump, won the hurdles in 8.69, Lynch took the 55 meters in 7.36, Casey won the mile in 5:30.71 and Rounds the weight throw in 52-7 ¼.

Southeastern Louisiana's Adonson Shallow was a double winner in the men's weight throw (63-9 ½) and shot put (52-8 ¼).

Cowboy head coach Brendon Gilroy said that he was pleased with the way his team came out and competed.

"This being our first meet with only a few workouts, I thought that we made a good start," the coach said.  "I was very pleased to see the way some of our freshmen competed.  It was a very good effort by all.
