Cowboys Win Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Meet...Cowgirls Place Fourth

Corpus Christi, TX – McNeese State used four top 10 finishes to win the TAM-Corpus Christi cross country meet here Friday evening.
   
The Cowboys scored 28 points to top an eight team field in the men’s division.  IN the women’s class, the Cowgirls finished in fourth place in a 10 team field.
   
“It was a very good race for the men,” said coach Brendon Gilroy of the Cowboys. “Joshau Sawe ran a very good race and the only person to beat him was Shadrack Songok (a former conference champion) who was running unattached.
   
“We also got strong finishes from our second, third, fourth and fifth runners.”
   
McNeese’s Cowboys beat host A&M-Corpus for the title, the Islanders scoring 45 points. Other totals had UT Arlington with 109, Angelo State 118, Sam Houston State 137, Tex-Pan American 148, TAM-Kingsville 152 and Central Arkansas 163.
   
Songok, who is now an assistant coach at TAM-Corpus, turned in a 24:54 clocking for the five mile race.  Sawe ran 25:39.7.  David Rooney finished in third place for the Cowboys at 25:50.9, Johnathan Koenck was fifth at 25:58.8, Jarrett LeBlanc was sixth at 26:03.5l and Ryan Barrow ran 19th at 27:10.8.
   
The University of Texas won the women’s race with 28 points and was followed by Rice with 42, AM-Corpus with 78, McNeese with 110, UTA with 124, Sam Houston State with 176, Tex-Pan American with 212, Angelo State with 220, Central Arkansas 263 and St. Mary 290.
   
Tinette Burger, making her season debut, led the Cowgirls with a 16th place and a 17:58.9 clocking for 5K.
    Fionnuala Ross was next for the Cowgirls lwith 18:09.2 for 23rd place while Alvy Carragher was 24th with the same time, Aisling Casey ran 33rd at 18:33.3 and Amy Guinn was 34th at 18:38.3.
   
The race was run over the same course on which the Southland Conference championship will be held in October.
