The 50th Annual Pelican Relays will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 10-11, 2009 at AW Mumford Stadium on Roscoe B. Moore Track.

Nearly 850 athletes are scheduled to participate in this year's 50th Pelican Relays.

"We are expecting an exciting (Pelican) relays", says Southern interim head track coach, Tinnequo Lightfoot-Ross. "There are some very talented athletes set to run, including some of our own. A number of regional qualifiers will be here as well."

"We are also dedicating the 50th Pelican Relays to Coach (Johnny) Thomas. He has done so much for Southern University Track and Field over the years. He has dedicated so much of his life to many athletes in track and field, that it was a no-brainer for us to do this for him. He means so much to our program and to our athletes", says Coach Ross.

"The SWAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships are right around the corner, so this is a good test for us on our own track. We are going to use the Pelican Relays as a tune up for the SWAC," says Lightfoot-Ross.

"I think that this year's 50th Pelican Relays is going to be one of the best in recent years. We want to get the Pelican's back to the point where it was in its hay-day. There will be no dead periods in the meet. From the small kids, to the master's, to the collegiate athletes, it will be a great event and time for everyone."

Cost for the event is $5.00 for adults, and children ages 5 to 9 are $1.00, and under 5 free of charge.
