NEW ORLEANS — Sabrina Vargas, a district cross country champion and two-time state-meet qualifier from Brookshire, Texas, and Royal High School, has signed a scholarship to run for the women's program at Xavier University of Louisiana.
Vargas, 5 feet 2 and 108 pounds, is the second Houston-area runner to sign with the Gold Nuggets this year. The other is Rubeneisha Cooper of Pearland.
Vargas won the district championship as a freshman, finished second as a junior and senior and qualified for the state meet as a freshman and sophomore. Her best times include 12 minutes, 2.90 seconds for two miles and 20:09 for 5,000 meters. She helped Royal win district team championships the past three seasons.
As a sophomore Vargas was the district outdoor track champion at 1,600 meters and the 3,200 runner-up. She was 33rd in the Class 3A cross country state meet as a sophomore — running two miles in 12:21.90 — after finishing fifth in the regionals with a personal best.
"Sabrina Vargas is a nice addition for our women's program," Xavier coach Joseph Moses said. "She will make us a stronger and more competitive team."
Xavier is the three-time defending Gulf Coast Athletic Conference champion in women's and men's cross country, and both teams qualified for the 2008 NAIA National Championships. The Gold Rush and Gold Nuggets will begin their 2009 seasons in late August or early September.
