LSU Cross Country Teams Race at MSU to Start Season

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The LSU men’s cross country team opened the season in strong fashion as the squad posted a second-place finish Saturday in the Pre-SEC Invitational hosted by Mississippi State.

The Bulldogs captured the meet title, finishing with just 29 points. LSU earned runner-up honors with 48 points and Ole Miss followed with 75 points.

The Lady Tigers took fourth place with 89 points. Mississippi State clinched the women’s race tallying 26 points. Northwestern placed second with 36 points and Ole Miss rounded out with 71 points.

On the men’s side, junior Jacob Simmons highlighted LSU’s effort, recording a third-place finish after completing the 8K course in 25:12.64. Robert Scribner of Mississippi State posted a first place finish with (24:56.93) and Kyle Lewis of the Rebels took second with (25:00.00).

“I think the men ran well and had a good performance for the first meet of the season,” said LSU head coach Mark Elliott. "I was pleased with Jacob’s performance I knew he could go out and set the pace for the men.”

Not far behind Simmons were his two teammates who finished among the meet’s top-10 performers. Sophomore Richard Chautin finished seventh in 25: 43.79, while junior Michael Florek placed ninth with a time of 26:04.89. The LSU men’s team had a total of eight runners who finished among the meet’s top-25 performers.

On the women’s side, senior Christina Porter led the pack, placing 12th overall with a time of 20:04.37 over the 5K course.

The Lady Tigers had three others finish among the top 25, as freshman Laura Carleton was 14th (20:33.30) and teammates Jenna Henssler and Kayann Thompson clocked in at 20:57.62 and 21:34.73, respectively.

“It’s a growing process everyday with the women, we are very young but yet full of endurance,” said Elliott. “The course was very sloppy because of the rain yesterday, but the girls worked hard and I know will be stronger for the SEC Championship.”

Following the SEC-Pre Meet, both the men’s and women’s team return to Baton Rouge to prepare for the only home meet of the season, the LSU Tiger Cross Country Festival, on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Highland Road Park.
