Track & Field Signee Laurent Featured in SI's Faces in the Crowd

BATON ROUGE -- LSU track and field signee Rachel Laurent has been setting records in the pole vault as a high school senior, and the future Lady Tiger is featured in Sports Illustrated’s, “Faces in the Crowd,” that is appearing on newsstands now.

Laurent, a product of Vandebilt Catholic High School in Houma, La., has proven to be one of the most prolific pole vaulters in the history of girl’s high school track and field in the United States.

She has been recognized by Sports Illustrated for her exceptional performance at the Nollie Arcement Relays earlier this outdoor season when she cleared the magical 14-foot barrier for the No. 2 outdoor performance all-time by a high school girl in the United States.

Sports Illustrated has also designated Laurent as this month’s “High School Video Face” as the video of her extraordinary feat can be seen by logging on to www.takkle.com/videofaces.

Her mark of 14-0 stands a mere 2 ½ inches off the combined indoor and outdoor national record of 14-2 ½ set by Tori Anthony in 2007. Laurent has dominated the pole vault on a national level this year as she swept indoor national titles at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Washington, D.C., and the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in New York City.

Laurent is also in a position that not many high school girls find themselves as she has met the “B” qualifying standard for the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., this summer and ranks 15th among all female pole vaulters in the United States as of May 2.

USA Track & Field invites the Top 24 performers in each field event to compete in the Olympic Trials, and Laurent is currently the only female high school vaulter in the country to make the list.

A five-time indoor and outdoor state champion, Laurent has twice been named the Louisiana Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year for her performance. Her indoor personal best of 13-9 ¼ set earlier this season at the state indoor meet at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse ranks No. 4 all-time by a high school girl indoors in the United States.
