NW's Trecey Rew takes first in shot at LSU Alumni Gold

BATON ROUGE — With seven nationally-ranked teams competing Saturday at the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational track and field meet, along with a healthy number of Olympic contenders, Northwestern State sophomore Trecey Rew won the women’s shot put title.

Rew, the reigning Southland Conference Indoor shot put champion, had a winning throw of 47-5 3/4 to top Anteneshia Lindsey of Texas A&M (47-1 1/2) and Betty Williams of Ole Miss (46-10 1/4) in a 15-woman field. The Lady Demons’ star sophomore has been the top collegiate finisher in every meet this year, except for the Texas Relays.

Rew’s victory was the only one for Northwestern in the talent-laden event at Bernie Moore Track Stadium. It was among just three wins by athletes from state schools other than LSU, joining Tulane’s Aubrey Phillips in the women’s 5000 meter run and Southeastern Louisiana’s Teremine White in the men’s discus.

Her performance was best among seven Top 10 finishes for Northwestern athletes competing after their training schedules peaked for last Saturday’s NSU Invitational. Rew’s winning mark was more than two feet behind her school record 49-9 1/4 throw to win the SLC Indoor title in February.

School record-holder Chad Leath was sixth in the men’s 400 meter intermediate hurdles in 51.86, 0.30 behind the school record mark he posted winning last week. The Lady Demons’ 4x100 meter relay team ran a 46.44 time for sixth.

Mike Hill gave the Demons seventh in the men’s 110 meter hurdles in 14.41, while DeJon Griffin was seventh for the Lady Demons in the discus with a 141-2 throw. Griffin was also 10th in the women’s hammer with a 156-8 throw with teammates Mindy Toney (155-10) and Allison Holmes (151-0) right behind her.

Samuel Norton threw 184-5 for the Demons to earn eighth place in the men’s javelin.

The competition was the final full-scale meet for NSU prior to the SLC Outdoor Championships May 9-11 in Huntsville, Texas. Some Northwestern competitors are expected to take part in the prestigious Drake Relays next Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.
