LSU Track & Field in Position to Compete for Title; Thompson Sets Record

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Three Lady Tigers and the men’s distance medley relay team turned in All-American performances to lead the LSU track and field teams on the first day of competition at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

Senior Jessica Ohanaja finished sixth and junior Nickiesha Wilson placed seventh in the 60-meter hurdles, while junior Andrea Linton was a seventh-place finisher in the long jump and the Tigers’ distance medley relay team crossed the finish line in sixth place during Friday’s action.

The top-ranked Lady Tigers wrapped up the first day in a tie for ninth place in the team standings with nine points, while the third-ranked Tigers are currently tied for 29th with three points.

Both teams are still in the thick of the championship race as they look to win their first NCAA indoor titles since 2004. The women will open the final day of the competition with a total of six chances to score, and the men will have five opportunities to score big points on Saturday.

“The bottom line is that we know about as much now as we knew coming into the meet about who would win the thing,” said LSU head coach Dennis Shaver. “This is still a very wide open race on both the men’s and women’s sides. We knew we couldn’t win the track meet on the first day, and we’ve put ourselves in a position to be in the hunt in both races.”

Ohanaja and Wilson were the first LSU athletes to line up in a championship final at this year’s meet as the duo earned indoor All-America honors in the 60-meter hurdles for the second straight year by combining for seven points in the event.

After qualifying with a seasonal best time of 8.09 seconds in the preliminary round, Ohanaja improved with a time of 8.08 to cross the finish line in sixth place. Wilson followed close behind in seventh place with a time of 8.12 in the final heat.

Linton continued her outstanding indoor season by earning her first career All-America honor in the long jump with a top mark of 20 feet, 5 ¾ inches to finish seventh.

In addition, the men’s distance medley relay team earned All-America honors in its first ever appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships as senior Michael Hendry (1,200 meters), sophomore Armanti Hayes (400 meters), sophomore Jamaal James (800 meters) and sophomore John Kosgei (mile) crossed the finish line in sixth place with a time of 9:35.72.

“We had some good performances today, but I felt like we should have scored maybe a few more points on both sides,” Shaver said. “Andrea came up big for us in the long jump and just continues to have a great season. I feel like the two points she gave us are going to be big coming down the stretch tomorrow.”

Senior hurdler Ryan Fontenot made history in the prelims of the men’s 60-meter hurdles as he set a new school record in the event with a blistering time of 7.69, but the Baton Rouge native came up short of earning his first career All-America honor as he committed a false start in the final.

“I wasn’t really disappointed in Ryan, but I was disappointed for him,” Shaver said. “He’s a guy that does all the right things and deserved to be successful at this meet. You can’t make those mistakes if you want to win the track meet, but our guys are competitive and will give everything they’ve got to pick up it up tomorrow.”

The LSU sprinters stole the show during Friday’s qualifying action as Trindon Holliday and Richard Thompson broke the school record in the 60-meter dash in back-to-back prelim heats.

Holliday, who entered the meet with a seasonal best of 6.60 recorded on the same track at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 15, raced out of the blocks in the afternoon’s first preliminary heat and crossed the finish line with a new personal best and school record of 6.55.

That record lasted a mere seven minutes as Thompson dominated the second prelim heat with the fastest time in the world this season at 6.51, finishing .14 seconds ahead of heat runner-up J-Mee Samuels of Arkansas (6.65). Thompson entered the meet with a seasonal best and previous school record of 6.57 set at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York on Feb. 8.

In addition to breaking Holliday’s school record, Thompson set a new meet record for the NCAA Championships as he eclipsed the mark of 6.52 set by Arizona State’s Marcus Brunson in 1999.

“I saw what Trindon did before my race, but I wasn’t focused on it at all,” Thompson said. “I was worrying about winning my heat and qualifying for tomorrow. That’s what counts the most at a meet like this. I showed up focused and ready to run and had my best performance. I’m hoping to line up and run faster than everyone again tomorrow to help us win the title.”

Holliday agreed with Thompson that he hopes to repeat his performance on Saturday to help the Tigers break a four-year drought and win their first NCAA indoor title since the 2004 season.

“It didn’t last too long,” Holliday joked after seeing his school record broken by Thompson. “We came out with the same goal, and that was to just qualifying for the final. I didn’t want to come out wanting to break any records. I just came out and executed my race the best way I knew how.

“I’m happy for Richard and what he did. There is no competition between the two of us. We both want to win a team championship more than anything. Hopefully, we can come out tomorrow and make a statement with two big finishes and score some points for our team.”

Five other LSU athletes advanced to Saturday’s championship action as senior Kelly Baptiste (7.19) and sophomore Samantha Henry (7.25) advanced to the final in the women’s 60 meters, while senior Elkana Kosgei (1:49.03), junior Reuben Twijukye (1:49.58) and sophomore LaTavia Thomas (2:06.30) qualified for the final in the 800-meter run.

“We’ve got to come out firing tomorrow if we want to stay in the race,” Shaver said. “On the men’s side, we’ve got two guys in the 800, and Richard and Trindon both looked really good in the 60 meters today. They’re going to be tough to beat in that race tomorrow. John Kosgei also has a great chance to score for us in the 3,000 meters.

“It’s the same story for us on the women’s side. We advanced everybody into the second day that I thought should have gotten through. It’s going to be a real dogfight tomorrow, and we’ve got to come out firing because Arizona State and Michigan are going to be really tough to beat.”

The action at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships continues Saturday at 11 a.m. CDT with the conclusion of the men’s heptathlon, while the women’s pentathlon kicks off at 11:30 a.m. The afternoon’s first field events are scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. followed by the first events on the track at 6:15 p.m.
