FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- LSU freshman Chris Bujol kicked off the action for the Tigers at the 2008 SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday by making his conference debut in the men’s heptathlon at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Bujol wrapped up the first day in ninth place after scoring a personal best Day 1 total of 2,659 points through four events, including the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump.
The Plaquemine native opened with 789 points in the 60 meters after crossing the finish line in seventh place with a time of 7.27 seconds. He followed with 655 points and a mark of 20 feet, 8 ½ inches in the long jump and 528 points and a new personal best throw of 35-1 ¾ in the shot put.
Bujol, who recorded a Day 1 total of 2,562 at the LSU Combined Events on Jan. 31, finished the evening by scoring 687 points in the high jump after clearing a height of 6-1 ½. He is looking to improve upon his performance at the LSU Combined Events during which he scored 4,374 points in the heptathlon in his collegiate debut in the event.
Defending champion Jangy Addy of Tennessee is in a position to keep his crown as he leads the competition after the first day with 3,421 points. Addy is also the reigning SEC champion and an All-American in the decathlon after finishing third at the NCAA Championships a year ago.
Addy finished the day nearly 300 points clear of his nearest competitor as multi-event standout Mike Morrison of Florida is currently in second place with 3,137 points.
The men’s heptathlon continues Saturday at 2:10 p.m. with the 60-meter hurdles followed by the conclusion of the competition with the pole vault and the 1,000-meter run. The first field events at the SEC Indoor Championships are scheduled to get underway at 11 a.m. followed by the meet’s first open running events at 1:30 p.m.
