HOUSTON -- Northwestern State sophomore Trecey Rew won the women's shot put title while breaking the school reocrd Saturday at the 2008 Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Rew threw 49-9 1/4, better than the previous school record of 49-7 3/4 in 1999 by Tabitha Johnigan. That gives Rew two Lady Demon throws marks as she set the discus record outdoors last year. The Garland, Texas, native won the shot put competition Saturday by a foot and a half over Frednisha Marshall of Stephen F. Austin.

She was the only event champion in the two-day meet from Northwestern. The Demons fished sixth in the 12-team conference with 47 points, second among Louisiana teams, while the Lady Demons were ninth with 28 points, also second among Louisiana members.

Texas-San Antonio won the men’s title with 122 points and Sam Houston State was the women’s champion with 138. Stephen F. Austin was second in both divisions.

For Northwestern Saturday, the shot put provided the highlights. Along with Rew’s win, Corey Jones gave the Demons second in the men’s division with a 55-8 ¼ throw that was topped only by UTSA’s Luke Johnson (56-3 ¾).

The Demons picked up a third-place finish in the 800 meter run as Chris Pearson ran a 1:55.78, a half-second behind the winning mark. Northwestern, with the fastest time in the 4x400 relay entering the meet, ran fourth Saturday with a 3:19.65 time.

Chad Leath gave the Demons fifth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.23) and Anna Forest was fifth in the women’s 60 meter dash (7.77) for Northwestern. Sixth places on NSU’s scorecard came in the men’s 400 from Michael Green (49.47), and by Jazmen Williams in the women’s 200 (25.40).

Green took seventh in the men’s triple jump (47-6 ¼) while teammate Kennis Byars (46-9 ½) was eighth. Charles Jackson of NSU ran eighth in the 60 meter dash final (6.99), and the Lady Demon 4x400 relay team scored with its eighth-place 3:59.26 time.
