NEW YORK - Senior Gloria Asumnu set a season-best mark in the 60-meter dash finishing third, and freshman Zandria DeBowles placed 10th in the high jump Friday at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at The Armory.
Asumnu's 60m time of 7.25 is second in school history only to her own record mark of 7.22 set in 2007. Debowles, meanwhile, jumped 1.63 meters (5-04.25 feet) in the high jump event.
Junior Shaina Pelham finished 61st overall in the preliminary round 60m, but first in her heat and in a season-best 7.84 seconds. The top 16 runners by time advanced to the championship. In the 400m, sophomore Valencia Wilson finished 21st overall in the prelims with a season-best time of 55.88, junior Kyra Lobbins scored a season-best time of 59.00 and Debowles ran the distance in 1:00.24.
The New Balance Invite has proven to be a very deep meet, as it showed on the first day of competition. The 60m featured 107 runners, the 60m hurdles 88, the 400m 112runners and the 3,000m 53 runners in the women's sections. The 400m needed 22 heats to include every runner, and the 60m and 60m hurdles preliminary rounds required 16 and 14 heats, respectively.
