Tulane Claims Fourth Place Finish at Houston Indoor Opener

HOUSTON - Gloria Asumnu, Jasmine Momoh, Shanon Beelendorf and Shaina Pelham all made good showings for the Tulane University track and field team Saturday, as the team took home a fourth place finish at the Houston Indoor Opener at Yeoman Field House on the campus of the University of Houston.

Asumnu, a senior running in her hometown of Houston, won the 400-meter dash with a personal best time of 56.34 seconds, while Momoh, a redshirt sophomore also from Houston, placed seventh in the 60m finals with a personal best time of 7.66. Beelendorf, a senior, placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.45, earning eight points, and was followed by junior Vanessa Kienast (2:22.06 - 3 pts.) and freshman Aieshia Brooks (2:23.24 - 1 pt.).

Pelham, a junior from Orlando, finished second in the 200m with a time of 25.28, scoring eight points, and was followed by sophomore Olivia Kizzee, who placed fourth with a time of 25.83. In the 60m preliminary heats, Andrea Rosemond, a senior from Missouri City, Texas, placed ninth with a time of 7.70, qualifying her for the finals, but she did not run. Freshman Brree Carter ran 8.41 in the 60m prelims, not enough to qualify for the final round.

The one mile run was completed for the Green Wave by freshmen Rebecca Coady and Caitlin Hornbeck, who placed seventh with a time of 5:19.74 and 19th with a time of 6:17.64, respectively. The 3000m was a tight race among Wave runners, led by senior Aubrey Phillips a Baton Rouge native, who placed fifth with a time of 10:11.18. Freshman Laurie Dalrymple pushed her senior teammate to the end, placing sixth with a time of 10:13.58.

In the high jump, Tulane was paced by a freshman, Zandria DeBowles, who had a best jump of 1.58m (5-02.25), enough to place fourth and earn five team points. Also placing in the high jump for the Green Wave was sophomore Arielle Minor who set her best jump of the day at 1.53m (5-00.25). In the long jump, the Wave was paced by two freshmen - Brree Carter and Debowles - as Carter turned in a best jump of 5.51m (18-01.00) and Debowles earned a high mark of 5.08m (16-08.00). Sophomore Nicolette Taku, also a from Baton Rouge, had a day's best jump of 4.82m (15-09.75).

Junior transfer Katarina Busljeta led the Wave throwers in the shot put with a high mark throw of 11.90m (39-00.50), and was followed by Minor, who turned in a best throw of 10.47m (34-04.25).

The Green Wave returns to action Saturday, Jan. 19, as the team travels to nearby Baton Rouge for the Purple Tiger Classic, held at the Carl Maddox Field House on LSU's campus, beginning at 10 a.m. A recap and results of the meet will be available on www.TulaneGreenWave.com.
