Cowgirl 4x100 relay team posts SLC fastest time; former athletes excelling around the world

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese track and field wrapped up its competition at the Florida Relays on Saturday evening with the highlight being the women's 4x100 meter relay team that posted a Southland Conference season-best time of 46.01.
 
The relay squad comprised of Danielle Epps, Simone Johnson, Jasmine George and Jasmine Webb, finished 27th overall in the event but ran the fastest time in the league by 34 seconds.
 
Matt Simmons posted a career-best mark in the shot put during for the outdoor season with a throw of 47 inches, 3 ½ inches and placed 19th overall.  That mark leaped him to No. 7 on the Southland's shot put ranking list.  Hiram Morales threw 47-1.5 for a 20th place finish.
 
In other action, the women's 4x200 relay team made up of the 4x100 crew, ran a 1:38.67.
 
Also in the meet, former Cowgirl standout La'Shantena Rounds won the women's hammer throw with a toss of 177-07 as she competed unattached.
 
Other former McNeese track athletes have put up big performances recently.
 
On Saturday, former Cowboy standout thrower Thomas Canchola took gold in the hammer throw at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Dash with a measurement of 199-00.
 
David Rooney, who became McNeese's first-ever cross country All-American in 2012, is a member of the Northern Arizona Elite Running Club and ran at the Stanford Invitational this past Friday where he finished sixth in his section in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 28:41.72.  His time was the sixth-fastest in the two groups, a combined 79 runners.
 
Former Cowboy distance runner Joe Conway had a nice showing at the 2014 WMA World Indoor Championships in Budapest, Hungary March 25-30 where he qualified to the semifinal round in the 45-and-over 800 meters.  Conway ran a 2:14.25 in the preliminaries then clocked a 2:11.87 in the semifinals and fell three seconds shy of qualifying to the finals.
 
Back in mid-February, former McNeese conference champion Alex Bruce-Littlewood won the Irish National Indoor 3k Championship with a time of 8:02.13 to take the title in the senior division.  Bruce-Littlewood is a member of the Leevale Athletic Club which is based out of Cork, Ireland.
