NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Northwestern State senior All-American sprinter Justin Walker ran the nation's seventh-fastest 200 meter dash time this season as he swept the short sprint titles Saturday at the Skechers Carl Kight Invitational track and field meet hosted by Stephen F. Austin.
Walker won the 200 in 20.66, a meet record and 0.70 better than the second-best finisher. Earlier he took the 100 in 10.37. He ran the third leg on the Demons' 4x100 meter relay that ran 40.57, good for second Saturday in a tight race with host SFA (40.51) which produced the Southland Conference's top two times this season.
NSU competitors posted four more wins Saturday on the final day of the two-day event including 18 teams, among them eight from the 14-team Southland.
Quiana Griffin took the women's 400 meter dash in 55.76, the league's second-fastest time this spring. Shakemia Johnson won the women's discus with a personal-best 156-7 that also ranks second in the Southland.
Aaron Williams was first in the men's triple jump (48-10 ¾) and Por'sha Thomas won the women's division (39-3 ¾).
Brent Giddens gave the Demons second in the 110 meter hurdles (14.76) and was seventh in the 400 meter hurdles (54.66). Joining Walker on the second-place 4x100 relay for the Demons were Christian Willis, Keenan Jackson, Walker on the third leg and Williams.
Keona Jackson gave the Lady Demons a third-place 46-4 ¼ in the shot, a season's best. Kwanzaa Andrus was sixth with a personal best 44-6 ¾ and Rechelle Bessard was seventh at 43-8 ½.
Bessard finished third in the discus with a 151-3 mark.
Consuela Lindsay ran fourth in the 400 meter dash, fifth-best in the Southland this spring.
Quinton Helaire gave the Demons fourth in the high jump (6-6).
Nijah Lain was sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:04.58). In the men's 400, Keenan Jackson was sixth (48.79).
