Loyola T&F to take part in Tulane Team Challenge

(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s track and field team will take part in the Tulane Team Challenge at Tad Gormley Stadium on Saturday, March 29th. Throwing events are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. and running events are slated for a 1 p.m. start.

The Wolf Pack will be participating in their second outdoor meet of the season. At the Southern Mississippi Invitational freshman Toren Arnold and Justin Johnson set school records. Arnold took down a 12 year old school record in the 800m with a time of 2:00.31. Johnson defeated a mark set last year by Claude Nelson by racing the 200m dash in 22.72, just .03 seconds faster than Nelson.

Carlos Flores will compete in the shot put and discus throws after setting an indoor school record in the shot put the last time he participated. Flores set the record with a throw of 10.0 meters which was 0.28 meters better than his former school record which was set during his freshman season of 2012.

The Wolf Pack will have four participants in the women’s 800m race. Emma Larson posted the team’s season best time of 2:33.08 at the Southern Mississippi Invitational. Larson will be joined in the race by Kennedi Henneberger, Jessica Williams, and Denise Powell. Powell is the school’s record holder in the event with a time of 2:27.83 which was set at the Mississippi College Twilight Invitational last season.

Last season, the Wolf Pack opened their outdoor season at the Tulane Team Challenge and set two school records. Denise Powell set the 800m mark with a time of 2:28.64, but would break her own mark later in the year at the Mississippi College Twilight Invitational. Taylor Rencher set the Loyola long jump record with a 16-6 jump. That surpassed Raven Lewis’ school record of 16-5 which stood since 2011. Sarah Tortorich ran the school’s fastest 400m time of the year with a mark of 59.93.

This will be the first meet in charge for interim head track and field coach Matt Shelton. Shelton previously served as Loyola’s assistant track and field coach but took over the interim duties as Andy Canegitta took the position of head track and field coach at the University of Mobile.
