Several PRs set or tied for McNeese at Texas Southern Relays

HOUSTON – McNeese State's corps of men's javelin throwers came up big for the second straight week of the outdoor season, this time nailing down three of the top five places at the 63rd annual Texas Southern Relays.
 
A total of seven personal records were either tied or broken during the two-day meet.
 
Stephen Eccles set a new personal record in the javelin event with a throw of 227 feet, 9 inches, to take first place and beating his old PR by 11 feet.  Meanwhile, Chance Curlee set a new PR with a 211-01 mark to finish third while John Paul Vidrine finished fifth with a throw of 206-05.
 
Eccles' throw is the third-longest in the NCAA East Preliminary Qualifying rankings and the fourth longest in the nation.

 

McNeese State also had first place finishes from Jasmine Webb in the women's 200-meters with a time of

24.74 in her first competition of the outdoor season.  She was also a member of the Cowgirls' 4x100-meter relay team that placed first with a time of 46.67.  In addition to Webb, the relay squad was made up of Danielle Epps, Simone Johnson and Jasmine George.

 
In the men's pole vault, Dakota Breaux finished third while tying a PR with a clearing of 15 feet, 1 inch, and in the women's pole vault, Nicole Casper tied her PR with a mark of 11 feet, 11 ¾ inches to finish fourth in the event.
 
Cowgirl thrower RiKara Turner finished fourth in the discus and eighth in the hammer throw.  Her discus heave of 147-10 was the second longest throw in her career while her hammer throw of 160-07 beat her old PR by 11 feet.
 
Maya Tunwar finished seventh in the women's javelin with a PR mark of 113-06.
 
Cowboy hurdler Cody Skarupa rounded out seven athletes to set or tied PRs after he ran a 54.18 in the men's 400-meter hurdles for a new personal record and a fifth place finish.
 
Cherby Laguerre, who ran a 47.42 for the fastest time in the 400-meter dash prelims, scratched in the finals.  He placed fourth in the 200-meters with a time of 21.67.
 
Also scratching in the finals of an event was George who ran a 14.77 in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles as the fourth fastest time.
