Webb sets record in 60m; Rounds top female field event scorer as 2014 SLC Indoors end

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Jasmine Webb notched her named in the school record book for the second in as many days at the 2014 Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships when she set a school record in the 60-meter dash for the second straight day and finished third in the event.
 
Webb clocked a 7.52 in the race bettering her mark of 7.53 that she ran in Wednesday's preliminary round.  She also finished seventh in the 200 meters to help guide the Cowgirls' team to a finish in a tie for fourth place with Lamar with 53 points and was the top-ranked Louisiana school in the final team standings.
 
"We had some great individual performances today," said head coach Brendon Gilroy.  "Our seniors stepped up and put themselves into scoring position."
 
Webb was one of two Cowgirl seniors to take the medal stand, joining La'Shantena Rounds, who placed second in the shot put with a personal record mark of 48 feet, 4 inches.  This came one day after she dominated the weight throw to win gold and complete a season sweep in the event by winning gold in every indoor meet of the season.  RaKira Turner added point for the Cowgirls in the event by finishing sixth with a heave of 44 feet, 4 inches.
 
With gold on Wednesday and silver on Thursday, Rounds earned the female high-point champion for field events with a total of 18 points won.
 
Mid-distance runner Amy Talbot scored points in two events on the day.  She finished just off the medal stand with a fourth place finish in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:03.84, and was seventh in the 800-meters with a 2:17.95.
 
Other Cowgirl scorers saw Jasmine Cornelius tied a PR in the high jump with a clearing of 5 feet, 5 inches to finish fifth.  This came one day after she won gold in the long jump for the second consecutive year.  Nicole Casper placed sixth in the pole vault with a height of 11 feet, 10 ¾ inches and Jasmine George finished seventh in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.78.
 
The Cowboys ended the meet in seventh place with 43.5 points with 21 of those being scored on the final day. 
 
Tristan Joynes was the lone medal winner for the Cowboys in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.13.
 
Cherby Laguerre scored points for McNeese in two events after he finished seventh in both the 200 and 400-meter dashes and the Cowboys had two point scorers in the mile run – Oliver James who placed fourth and Brock Moreaux in seventh.  Ryan Holroyd, who struck silver in the 5,000 meters on Wednesday, finished fifth in the 3k on Thursday.
 
A third of McNeese's points, men and women combined, were scored by freshmen, sophomores or juniors.
 
"We had several underclass men and women step up for us," said Gilroy.  "We finished about where I thought we would on the women's side.  Youth on the men's side caught up with us down the stretch.


Sam Houston State won the women's team championship with 132 points followed by Stephen F. Austin at 124, Lamar with 82 and Central Arkansas, who tied with McNeese State with 53.
 
Southeastern Louisiana won the men's championship with 119 points followed by Sam Houston State at 106.5 and Stephen F. Austin with 91.
