La'Shantena Rounds shines in final home meet of her career

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese State seniors La'Shantena Rounds and Amy Talbot closed out their home indoor career with a bang on Saturday afternoon, Rounds setting yet another school record in winning the weight throw while Talbot with a first place showing in the 800 meters with a near school record time.
 
Rounds won the weight event for the fifth consecutive week and her record throw of 68-09 has jumped her to No. 10 in the nation.  She also took first in the shot put event with a mark of 45-01.
 
Talbot won the 800 meters with a personal record time of 2:12.81, ranked No. 1 in the Southland Conference as the indoor season begins to wind down.
 
Jasmine George became the first Cowgirl in school history to break the :08 second barrier in the 55 meter hurdles when she took gold with a school record time of 7.96.  Fellow sprinter Jasmine Webb won in the 55-meter dash with a near school record 6.97 time while Danielle Epps finished second in the event with a personal record time of 7.09
 
Overall, the Cowgirls finished with 10 first place winners on the day while the Cowboys had five gold medal winners.
 
"I'm really pleased with the way we competed today," said head coach Brendon Gilroy.  "I would like to thank all of the officials, volunteers and non-competing athletes who helped out not only with today's meet, but with all three indoor events for the season."
 
On the men's side, Oliver James had a big day in being the first collegian to cross the finish line in the mile run with a time of 4:16.27.  That personal record time ranks him second best in the conference on the season.  Alex Evans posted a time of 4:18.40 to finish third and has jumped to No. 6 in the league rankings.
 
Woodney Guerrier and DeMarcus Cobb placed 2-3 in the 55-meter hurdles, both with personal record times.  Guerrier ran a 7.88 and Cobb a 7.90.  Those times ranks them No.s 8 and 9 in the league rankings.
 
Hiram Morales won the shot put event for the second week in a row, this time with a mark of 50-06.25.  Matt Simmons placed second in the event with a personal record throw of 48-05.25 and has jumped into the top 10 in the league rankings with a No. 9 listing.
