New Orleans Metro Championships Recap

The New Orleans Metro Championships at City Park ended on a positive note for the Jesuit boys and Mount Carmel girls this past Wednesday. This was one of the few XC meets this season that wasn't slowed by inclement weather. With a light breeze and cool temperatures, runners were able to enjoy racing in ideal conditions.

In the girl’s race, Mia Meydrich (Dominican), Haley Johnson (Newman) and Celia Zaeringer (Patrick Tayor) pulled away from the pack right from the beginning, creating a tight battle for first. Towards the middle of the race, Celia and Mia began to run away from Haley and quickly developed a “cat & mouse” race, while waiting for the ideal moment to kick it in. At the end, Mia pulled away with a final push to win in a time of 18:33, whle Haley recaptured second over Celia.  Completely exhausted from their efforts, both Mia and Haley collapsed, showing us that their final efforts in the race truly paid off and finished with some great times.

On the boy’s side, Jesuit had a huge win over John Curtis and Brother Martin. In last week’s rankings, Jesuit was number 5 and John Curtis was number 3. Thanks to a pack of Blue Jays that kept John Curtis’, and BM’s top runners at bay, they pulled away with a 9-point win over the Pats. Although Jesuit’s team scores added up for a first place win, the overall race was won by John Curtis’, Devyn Keith, winning in a time of 15:57. Now we have to wait and see if Jesuit can keep up this momentum and win at the upcoming District 10-5A Meet, bragging rights for New Orleans XC.
