BATON ROUGE -- LSU sprint standout Xavier Carter was named the NCAA Division I Men\'s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year it was announced Friday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The award completes a sweep of this year\'s national awards for Carter as he was also named the indoor athlete of the year in March.
Carter was recognized after making history at last week\'s NCAA Outdoor Championships, becoming the first athlete to ever win both the 100 and 400 meters at the national meet. Coupled with LSU\'s victories in the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays, Carter joined Jesse Owens as the only other athlete to ever win four events at an NCAA meet.
In recording the four victories, Carter posted a pair of personal-bests and one school record mark. His time of 10.09 seconds in the 100-meter final shattered his previous school record of 10.12 set in April, while his time of 44.53 in the 400 meters ranks as the second fastest time in school history.
In all, Carter accounted for 25 of the Tigers\' 51 points at the NCAA Championships, a total that would have placed him 12th in the final team standings alone.
In addition to his success at the national meet, Carter was unstoppable leading up to it. He won the 200 and 400 meters at the SEC Outdoor Championships and followed that with victories in the 100 and 400 meters at the NCAA Mideast Regionals.
He finished the outdoor season undefeated in the open events, winning three 100-meter races, two 200-meter crowns and four 400-meters titles, en route to posting the fastest times in the NCAA in both the 200 (20.13) and 400 (44.53) meters.
In addition, Carter helped the Tigers\' 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams to undefeated seasons as both groups won nine straight races during the outdoor campaign.
