Milliron Louisiana Male Newcomer; Five Others Earn All-State

SUNY Cobleskill transfer honored by LSWA

Senior Michelle Ogashi turned in the state of Louisiana's second-best triple jump
BATON ROUGE – A strong performance at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships garnered sophomore Jeffrey Milliron quite a bit of attention, earning his second Newcomer of the Year award Sunday.

The Cobleskill, N.Y., native was named the male newcomer for the Louisiana Sports Writers Association 2012 All-Louisiana Track and Field team.

Four other schools – Louisiana Tech, Tulane, Northwestern State and LSU – would also have athletes honored in the voting of track and field SIDs in the state of Louisiana. Voters could not choose athletes from their own schools in the results.

The LSWA also released its list of the top three times or distances in outdoor events this year which serves as its All-Louisiana team in each event. Milliron joins five teammates with some of the best marks in the state.

A transfer from SUNY Cobleskill, Milliron placed third in the discus at the Southland meet with a toss of 181-11, second best in the state.  He was also named the SLC men's outdoor track and field newcomer of the year. He was also sixth in the shot put (51-01¾) and ninth in the hammer throw (160-0).

Senior All-American Kovey Simmons (DeRidder, La.) turned in the third-best pole vault in the state, clearing 17 feet, five inches, at the LSU Relays. Freshman Jonathan Kinchen (Ponchatoula, La.), also a member of the Lion gridiron squad, turned in the third-best discus toss (163-0) with his performance at the Southland meet.

Three Lady Lions, Ashley and Brittany Pfantz, and Michelle Ogashi, also turned in some of the top marks in the state of Louisiana this past season.

The Pfantz sisters, natives of DeRidder, La., own the second and third-best marks in the women's pole vault. Brittany, a junior, cleared 13-1.75 at Northwestern's Johnson Invitational and Ashley, a freshman, cleared 12-7.5 at the Southland meet.

Ogashi, a senior from New Iberia, La., turned in the state's second-best triple jump (42-6.25) at Louisiana-Lafayette's Louisiana Classics.

Winning special honors for LSU were on the women's side were Kimberlyn Duncan (Track Athlete of the Year) and, Dennis Shaver (Women's Coach of the Year). On the men's side, Barrett Nugent was the Track Athlete of the Year while Damar Forbes was the Field Athlete of the Year. Aaron Ernst was the Freshman of the Year and Shaver also took Men's Coach of the Year honors.

Louisiana Tech's Chelsea Hayes was the women's Field Athlete of the Year, while both Estefany Cruz of Tulane and  Ashley Aldredge of Northwestern State tied in votes for women's Freshman of the Year. Southeastern Louisiana's Jeff Milliron was the men's Newcomer of the Year for non-freshman.

Duncan was a three-time NCAA Champion in 2012 and the SEC Co-Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. Highlighting her year was a personal best in the 200 Meters in the NCAA semifinals of 22.19, the second fastest time in the world this year. She became the first Lady Tiger to win back-to-back Outdoor titles in the 200 and the first sprinter to sweep indoor and outdoor championships in back-to-back seasons. The junior also anchored the Lady Tigers to the title in the NCAA 4x100 meters and would lead LSU to its fifth SEC Outdoor title in six seasons by winning the 100, 200 and 4X100 relay

Senior Nugent was a three-time NCAA All-American in 2012, taking an NCAA title as part of the Tigers' NCAA Champion 4x 100 relay team while also taking third in the 60 meter hurdles indoor. In that final, he broke his own school record with a time of 7.55. He also earned All-American honors outdoors with his fourth-place in the finals of the Outdoor championships. Nugent became the first LSU Tiger to win three-straight SEC titles in the 110 hurdles with his win at the SEC Outdoor Championships.

Forbes took second in both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor meets with seasonal bests of 26-7¾ indoors and 26-8¼ outdoors. The junior also took home the long jump silver medal with runner-up finishes at both the SEC Indoor and SEC Outdoor meets in 2012. His best ranked No. 1 nationally indoors and No. 3 in the NCAA during the outdoor season.

Ernst was one of the NCAA's top freshman sprinters during the 2012 season with personal bests of 10.15 in the 100-meter dash and 20.39 in the 200-meter dash during his rookie season. He was the only freshman to qualify for the NCAA finals in both the 100 and 200 meters at the NCAA Outdoors. He was fifth in the 200 meter finals and eighth in the 100 meters to earn All-American honors and was a member of LSU's winning 4x100-meter relay team.

Coach Shaver led LSU to the women's outdoor championship and the LSU men to a second place finish outdoors. The women also won the SEC Outdoor title and he was named SEC Women's Outdoor Coach of the Year and the USTFCCCA South Central Region Women's Head Coach of the Year.  The Lady Tigers national title was their first since 2008, their 15th Outdoor title overall. His athletes had six NCAA event titles, 11 SEC event titles, 39 All-American honors and 36 All-SEC honors.

Louisiana Tech's Hayes in winning women's field honors finished third in the long jump, the only time all season she did not win a long jump competition.  She won the long jump at the East Prelims with only one attempt. She set school and WAC records in long jump with non-wind aided mark of 21-10¼. Over the last two years, has accumulated six All-American honors.  Part of two relays on the state best times list and the leader by over a foot in the long jump.

Cruz of Tulane and Aldredge of Northwestern State tied for Freshman honors with Cruz in the triple jump earning honorable mention All-American honors indoors.  She had the third best triple jump in the state at 42-1¼ in the Conference USA meet in May.

Aldredge was the nation's 17th-ranked javelin throwing with a 166-0 best, second in the state. She won the Southland Conference championship for the Lady Demons despite an injury, which hampered her throwing in the NCAA East prelims.
