Simmons Qualifies For NCAA Championships

Pole vaulter sets school record while earning second-consecutive trip

Results - Day 3

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –
For the second-consecutive year, Southeastern Louisiana pole vaulter Kovey Simmons earned a trip to the NCAA Championships with his performance Saturday at the NCAA East Preliminary Round at Hodges Stadium on the University of North Florida campus.

“Kovey made it through and was outstanding,” head coach Sean Brady said. “He had no problem pulling the trigger. I anticipate him turning in the same kind of performance at the national meet in a couple of weeks.”

Simmons, a DeRidder native, set the school record while finishing tied for fourth (17 feet, 5.44 inches) with Marvin Reitze of South Carolina.

The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, June 6-9.

The Lady Lions also had an athlete competing on the final day of the preliminaries.

Michelle Ogashi had three scratches and they were all very good jumps, but couldn't get a mark in,” Brady said. “She missed qualifying by a couple of centimeters.

“It was a bittersweet afternoon,” Brady added. “We got one athlete through, but not the other.”
