HAMMOND – It was a long time coming for the Southeastern Louisiana University track and field program as the Lions officially dedicated its new complex and held its first-ever Southeastern Lion Invitational on Friday.

With over 100 track and field alumni members returning to campus, including some from as far away as Colorado and many from the Lions' 1975 National Championship team, Southeastern held its first official track meet since the early 1990's.

Competing on its own track for the first time, Southeastern claimed seven individual titles along with men's 4x400-meter dash in a meet that featured 11 teams, including Southland Conference rivals Lamar, McNeese State, Nicholls State and Northwestern State.

“We had a couple of PR's and a few season-bests, our young men and women stepped up and really competed well,” Southeastern head coach Sean Brady said. “It always a little bit more when you're at your place, in front of your people and your fans and they showed that today. The kids that are low on our depth chart stepped up for us and made some things happen.”

Freshman Ikea Kaufman paced four Lady Lions to individual titles as she claimed the high jump in a season-best mark of 5 feet, 6 inches. Jessica Fekete captured the women's hammer throw with a mark of 175-9 while Brittany Pfantz claimed the pole vault (12-11.50) and Michelle Ogashi the triple jump (42-00.75).

Southeastern also received solid performances on the women's side paced with second-place finishes by Ashley Pfantz (pole vault, 11-11.75), Tess Mullings (100-meter hurdles, 14.39) and the 4x400-meter relay team that finished in 3:49.71.

Renada Living placed third overall in the women's hammer throw (164-7) while Alicia Noel was third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.90) and Bethany Burst third in the 3,000-meter run (11:20.73).

Diana Marcantel placed fourth overall in the high jump (5-2.50), Colleen Butler was fourth in the pole vault (10-11.75), Shalicia Rochon was fourth in the shot put (45-6.25) and Jenna Baker was fourth in the javelin (128-6); Tamra Grayson placed fourth overall in the 400-meter dash (56.88) while Lindsey Toups was fourth in the 800-meter run (2:19.60).

On the men's side, Southeastern claimed individual titles in the triple jump, pole vault and discus. Phillippe Moore claimed the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 47-3.75 while Jeff Milliron claimed the discus with a throw of 177-3. Kovey Simmons claimed the pole vault with a mark of 17-00.75.

Moore added a second-place finish in the long jump (24-3.50) for the Lions while Milliron was second in the shot put (51-10.50), Derek Hampton finished second in the javelin (198-1), Shaquell Windley place second in the 400-meter dash (48.07) and Henry Rop finished second in the 3,000-meter run (8:53.94).

Milliron also placed third overall in the hammer throw (144-11) with Seth Jones finished third in the shot put (47-7), Abram Taylor placed third in the 110-meter hurdles (14.54), Antonio Herbert was third in the 100-meter dash (10.53) and the men's 4x400-meter relay team finished third in 3:14.93.

The day began with the dedication of the Lions' new track complex, located on North Oak Street adjacent to the Southeastern Louisiana University Kinesiology and Health Studies building and near the former location of Cefalu Coliseum. Track alums from as far back as the 1940's were in attendance, including past coaches and Southeastern Hall of Fame members Thiel and Larry Crow.

“That's our history, that's our linage, they are the people that made this possible,” Brady said. “I was really happy to see this. It was not just a track meet for me … it was a lot more sentimental. My former (collegiate) coach (Andy Thiel) was here. I saw scores of (former) athletes that I have coached over the years that came back and supported our group, worked the meet and have supported us over the years. It was an opportunity for us to get back to our alumni, to let them know that they have a home and they have a stake in this and their blood, sweat and tears is not in vain.”

Southeastern returns to action next Saturday (April 28) when it travels to compete in the Golden Eagle Classic, hosted by Southern Miss, in Hattiesburg, Miss.
