HAMMOND – Kovey Simmons set a school record in the men's pole vault Saturday and several Lady Lions turned in some of the best performances in Southeastern Louisiana history at the LSU Relays in Baton Rouge, La.
“As a team we definitely got better this week,” head coach
Sean Brady said. “Some of our younger athletes showed some life.”
Southeastern improved in both the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay. The men's team of TJ Herbert,
Shaquell Windley,
Brendon Mitchell and
Abram Taylor ran a time of 3 minutes, 15.34 seconds in the finals. The Lady Lion team of
C'Arra Watts,
Tamra Grayson,
Keisha Celestine and
Alicia Noel turned in the fourth-best performance in school history (3:52.42).
Michelle Ogashi finished third in the women's triple jump (40 feet, 10 ½ inches) and turned in the third-best performance in school history a week after setting the Southeastern record.
Bethany Burst placed fourth in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:55.72), but the effort was the second-best in school history.
The big story of the second day, however, was All-American
Kovey Simmons breaking the Southeastern record in the men's pole vault (17-5).
Other top performances on day two included a third-place finish for
Brittany Pfantz in the women's pole vault (12 ½), and a pair of fifth-place finishes for
Abram Taylor in the men's 110-meter hurdles (14.98 seconds) and
Derek Hampton in the men's javelin throw (198-7).
On day one of the meet,
Shalicia Rochon turned in the second-best women's shot put (46-2 ½) in school history while the Lady Lion team of
Bernadette Derosier, Noel,
Sydni Jones and
Nia Stewart combined to finish third (47.41) in the preliminaries of the women's 4x100-meter relay.
Southeastern returns to action Wednesday at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.
