HAMMOND – With the experience of a full meet accomplished, Southeastern Louisiana head track and field coach
Sean Brady is eager to see some improvement from his underclassmen at the LSU Relays Friday and Saturday in Baton Rouge, La.
“The common theme is to see how our underclassmen can progress forward week to week to week,” Brady said. “We're still two months out from our conference meet and we have time.”
This week the Lions and Lady Lions will have a chance to improve against top-notch competition.
“This meet is not a great meet to learn because it's a high-level competition meet,” Brady said. “Some of our freshmen may be lining up against a former Olympian or an All-American. But what better experience can you have in terms of seeing where you are and where you would like to be?”
Field events kick off the schedule at 10:30 a.m. Friday with the women's javelin throw. Running events kick off the afternoon session at 2:15 p.m. with the preliminaries in the women's 4x100-meter relay. An evening session begins at 6:45 p.m., but the first collegiate event – the women's sprint medley relay – doesn't begin until 7 p.m.
Saturday's collegiate running events begin at 9:30 a.m. with the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. The field events begin at 11 a.m. with the women's discus. An afternoon session of running events begins at 1 p.m. with the finals of the women's 4x100-meter relay.
Heading into the meet,
Michelle Ogashi is ranked fifth nationally in the triple jump after her winning effort at the Louisiana Classics. Last week,
Brittany Pfantz (women's pole vault) and
Kovey Simmons (men's pole vault) each turned in winning efforts as well at the Louisiana Classics.
“Our upperclassmen are fantastic right now,” Brady said. “They're competing on a very high level and exceeding expectations, but we've got to find a way for the younger ones to start moving up.”
