Southeastern To Stretch Legs In Louisiana Classics

Three-day meet provides full-squad competition

Kovey Simmons returns to lead the pole vaulters in the outdoor season
HAMMOND – After rain wiped out several chances to compete last weekend, Southeastern Louisiana will finally be able to stretch its legs Thursday through Saturday at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, La.

“We wanted to take everybody last weekend, but with the weather it just didn't seem like the right call to make,” head coach Sean Brady said. “It wasn't conducive to relays.”

That didn't stop the Lady Lions from winning one of the two events they competed in at the Cowboy Relays in Lake Charles, La., as Jessica Fekete took first in the weight throw.

“We didn't really miss much,” Brady said. “Only about a third of the country competed during the first week. We're still apples to apples with the rest of them.”

This week, Southeastern will bring a full squad to the three-day event on the campus of Louisiana-Lafayette.

“This will be our first opportunity to run relays on the big oval,” Brady said. “We'll run a 4x1 and 4x4; we'll see how the freshmen respond. It's the season they know and are used to. I anticipate we'll have a much better showing in this first outdoor meet than we did in some of these indoor competitions.”

The meet kicks off Thursday with multi-events for the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon.

Friday morning the multi-events continue. Field events will begin at 11 a.m. with the men's hammer and running events start at 8:30 with the men's 10,000-meter run.

Saturday, field events begin at 10 a.m. with the women's discus and running events begin at 1 p.m. with the women's 300-meter steeple.

“We'll see most of the schools in Louisiana and a couple of the schools up north that are on Spring Break,” Brady said. “It'll be appropriate competition for where we are in the season.”
