HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana's
Kovey Simmons set a Lion indoor record in the pole vault (17 feet, four inches) at the NCAA qualifying meet Friday at LSU.
Simmons was attempting to move up the list of potential qualifiers for the NCAA Indoor Championship meet March 9-10 in Nampa, Idaho.
“I don't know if that will be enough to get him into the nationals or not, but it certainly moves him up the list quite a bit,” head coach
Sean Brady said. “He's having the senior season we had hoped for. It's just coming a little bit late. That bodes well for him when he hits outdoor competition.”
Simmons will have to wait until all the meets are complete to know if he has qualified.
Southeastern still has one athlete left to compete as
Shannon Grover will run at the meet in Birmingham, Ala., Saturday in the 200-meter dash.
