Grover, Simmons Face One Last Qualifying Attempt

Athletes headed to separate meets

Kovey Simmons will compete at LSU for last attempt at earning an NCAA-qualifying mark
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana will send two athletes to separate track meets Friday in one last effort to earn qualifying marks for next week's NCAA Indoor Championships.

The Lions will send Shannon Grover to run on the same banked track in Birmingham, Ala., that he set the school's indoor 200-meter dash record on earlier this season. It will also give Grover another chance to gain a certain level of comfort with the type of track used for NCAA championship competition.

“We want to give the seniors one last chance to qualify for the NCAAs,” head coach Sean Brady said. “Shannon has a legitimate shot and was in the mix until the conference meets were finished. This will give him one more chance.”

Grover, who currently owns the 20th-best time in the NCAA this season, will need to better the 16th-best mark of 21.02 seconds to qualify for the indoor championships.

Southeastern will send pole vaulter Kovey Simmons to Baton Rouge, La., to compete at LSU.

“Kovey has been pretty consistent this season, but he hasn't put one together yet,” Brady said. “He needs to get back to where he was as a junior.”

The NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held March 9-10 in Nampa, Idaho.
