Three Southeastern Athletes Win Individual Titles

HAMMOND – Senior Shannon Grover beat out fellow Lion T.J. Herbert Saturday to take home a conference title in the men's 200-meter dash at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships.

Grover turned in a time of 21.50 seconds, besting Herbert by less than half a second for the individual title and equaling the school's indoor record he set in January.

Shannon Grover had a phenomenal end to his career,” head coach Sean Brady said. “That is the fastest time (200 meters) ever run at that facility. And in the 60 he got beat by just a couple thousandths of second.”

Grover finished third in the men's 60-meter dash (6.80) and anchored the 4x400-yard relay team (3 minutes, 18.73 seconds) to a second place finish. Joining Grover on the relay team was Herbert along with freshmen Shaquell Windley and Abram Taylor.

“Overall it was pretty good day, but we missed moving up a few spots on the men's side,” Brady said. “Every point is crucial.”

As a team, the Lions finished eighth (42 points) in the Southland and the Lady Lions finished ninth (33 points).

Leading the Lady Lions were Michelle Ogashi and Brittany Pfantz. Ogashi won the women's triple jump title with a distance of 12.45 meters, breaking the Southeastern indoor record she set earlier in the season at the UAB Blazer Invitational.

“Ogashi won on her last jump,” Brady said. “She had a senior moment and responded the way you hope.”

Pfantz also set a school record on her way to winning the women's pole vault title with a height of 4.00 meters. It marks the second time this season she has set the school mark.

“As a whole we had a much better second day,” Brady said. “It's something for us to build upon heading into the outdoor season. We can make a move. Our freshmen are not freshmen anymore. They've been through championship competition.”
