MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Jan. 28, 2006) – The University of New Orleans men's and women's indoor track and field teams notched five first-place finishes at the Middle Tennessee Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Angela Makaha won the 400 meter dash for UNO with a time of 57.12, while Diana Jepchirchir collected a winning time of 10:15.04 in the 3000 meter run. The Privateer 4x400 yard relay team beat Western Kentucky's 'A" team by .84 seconds with a time of 3:56.13 and Bethany Elias collected a first place in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, four inches.
On the men's side, Frank Bwambale continued his superb long-distance running effort with a win in the 5000 meter race with a time of 8:46.11. The Privateers actually finished in the top three spots in that race with Scott Burley (8:47.86) coming in second and Corey Denstel (8:56.02) recording third.
In other results, Chianne Ashmon and Kennisha Joseph finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 55 meter dash with times of 7.45 and 7.62. KerryAnn Telesford posted a third-place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25:06, while Kerryann Stewart (25.42) captured sixth and Makaha (25.77) seventh.
Joining Makaha in the 400 meter dash finishes was Lina Futi with a time of 59.09 and a sixth-place showing. Tatenda Goranga (59.89) came in seventh and Jasmine Flournay (1:00.11) eighth.
Vicki Howard tallied a second place in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.03, just .03 seconds behind the winner of the race, while Jessica Walter and Amy Hamilton posted fourth and fifth place showings in the long jumps with marks of 17 feet, 10.5 inches and 17 feet, 1.5 inches, respectively. Hamilton also placed seventh in the triple jump at 35 feet, 7 inches, while Whitney Davis came in eighth at 34 feet, 9.5 inches.
In the shot put, Vanessa Cheatham put together another strong outing with a second-place and a toss of 42 feet, 5 inches in the shot put and Felicia Yearwood tallied a four-place throw of 41 feet, 4 inches. Cheatam also tallied fourth in the weight throw by hurling a 47 feet, 8 inch toss. Colleena Collins notched sixth with a 45 feet, 6 inch throw and Yearwood placed eighth at 41 feet, 10 inches.
For the men, Jameel Wilson took home third in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:58.27 and Mike Conley and Terrence Hooks placed seventh and eighth with times of 7.89 and 7.94, respectively. Conley also placed sixth in the high jump and pole vault events with a jump of six feet and a vault of 10 feet, six inches.
Daniel Flores rounded out the finishers for UNO with a seventh place in the weight throw with a toss of 45 feet, 10 inches.
