UNO Indoor Track Opens Season in Fine Fashion at Purple Tiger Invite

BATON ROUGE (Jan. 14, 2006) – The University of New Orleans indoor track and field team opened its season by capturing two first-place finishes on the women's side at the Purple Tiger Invitational here Saturday.


Diana Jepchirchir posted a 5:14.56 to win the women's 1-mile run, while Jessica Walter posted a top finish in the women's long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 3 inches to highlight the Privateers' day. Jepchirchir also finished third in the women's 3000 meter run with a 10:06.75.


Other UNO women's finishers on the day were Kerryann Telesford, who finished tied for eighth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.73 while Jasmine Flournay posted a 1:02.88 to capture seventh in the 400 meter run championship.


In the 800 meter run championship, Terrica Hamilton placed seventh with a time of 2:27.64, while Vicki Howard tallied seventh as well in the 60 meter hurdles by posting a time of 8.86. Bethany Elias and Whitney Davis came in seventh and eighth, respectively in the women's high jump as both posted jumps of 5 feet, 1.75 inches.


Vanessa Cheatam rounded out the UNO women's finishers by coming in fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 48 feet, 6 inches.


On the men's side, Juan Chapa captured fourth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:10.35, while Frank Bwambale (8:51.01) and Scott Burley (8:56.29) posted fourth and eighth, respectively in the 3000 meter run.


Philip Guidry posted a 4:48.54 in the men's 1-mile run, while Cory Denstel captured second in the 1-mile run championship with a time of 4:24.64. In the men's weight throw, Kipp Fellon tallied a throw of 45 feet, 4 ½ inches for finish in seventh, while the men's distance medley relay team posted a second-place showing as Burley, Bwambale, Jameel Wilson and Florent Joulain collected a time of 10:30.32.
