Cross Country Sweeps at Warhawk Invitational

 

MONROE, La. - The ULM cross country team capped an impressive showing by winning the men's and women's divisions of the ULM Warhawk Invitational Friday night at Selman Field.

The Warhawks defeated Grambling State 21-37 and Centenary 15-48 on the men's side, and also outpointed both squads 23-no score and 15-40 on the women's side to claim each of the overall team titles. 

Junior Daniel Mutai won his second consecutive race to open the 2011 season, placing first in the men's 8k run with a time of 25:56.83.  Darwin Price of Grambling State finished second with a time of 26:25.79.  

Senior Moses Chelimo led the next wave of ULM competitors by running a 27:27.20 for third overall.  Senior Britt Koestler was the next across the finish line, taking fourth with a time of 27:30.12.  Junior Silah Chumba had a second straight top-five finish, completing the course in 28:06.04 for fifth place.  Junior Devin Caldwell finished in eighth place, clocking a time of 28:45.84, with freshman Austin Thomas right behind in ninth at 28:53.20.  Freshman Tyler Sadler (30:15.13) and sophomore Jacob Heckford (30:20.28) crossed the finish line in 14th and 15th place respectively, followed by freshman Parker Raley, whose time of 32:43.80 was good enough for the 19th position. 

Junior Madeleine Robertson led three ULM finishers in the top-five of the women's division, completing the 5k run in 20:05.85 for the overall victory.  Senior Denise Myers earned runner-up honors with a time of 20:18.34.  Shequea Howard of Grambling State rounded out the first three across the finish line, clocking a time of 20:59.83. 

Junior Sharon Sason followed for the Warhawks in fourth place, finishing the course in 21:47.64.  Freshmen Anakaren Lopez (22:06.23) and Tyreca Jackson (22:08.86) claimed the sixth and seventh positions, with junior Jasmine Garcia not far behind in ninth with a time of 22:33.70.  Freshman Bethany Koestler earned 11th place with a time of 22:56.82. 

ULM will return to action at the Stephen F. Austin Pre-Conference Meet in Nacogdoches, Texas on Sept. 26.
