HAMMOND – Three Lions and three Lady Lions were selected to the 2011 All-Louisiana Track and Field Teams, which were announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association on Sunday.

Leading the way for the Southeastern Louisiana track and field teams was Kovey Simmons, who earned All-American honors in the pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Simmons was joined by Henry Rop (3,000 meter steeplechase), Steven Atkinson (decathlon), Brittany Pfantz (pole vault), Colleen Butler (pole vault) and Judith Schultheis (400 meter hurdles).

Simmons finished fourth at the national meet earlier this month. His school record height of 17 feet, 2.75 inches was the second best performance in the state this season.

A pair of Lions were third in the state in their respective events. Rop's time of 9:27.11 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and Atkinson's score of 6,006 points in the decathlon at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships in May were good enough to earn All-Louisiana notice.

Pfantz cleared 12 feet, 11.5 inches and Butler posted a height of 11 feet, 11.75 inches at the league's outdoor pole vault competition. The Lady Lions' performances were the second and third best, respectively, in the event.

Rounding out the Southeastern contingent was Schultheis. Her time of 1:00.05 in the 400 meter hurdles at the LSU Alumni Gold on the meet was the third fastest time in the event by a Louisiana collegian in 2011.

The team was chosen based on the best three times in the state in 21 men's and women's event from the national qualifying list through the NCAA Champions. The tracks SIDs in the state were able to nominate for special awards which were then voted on by an LSWA panel.

LSU's Barrett Nugent, the national champion in the 110 meter hurdles, was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Year, while teammate Walter Henning was tabbed the Field Athlete of the Year. LSU coach Dennis Shaver was named Coach of the Year, while Trey Hadnot of Louisiana Tech was named the top freshman. LSU also had the top newcomer in Horatio Williams.

On the women's side, national champions Kimberly Duncan of LSU (200 meters) and Trecey Rew of Northwestern State (discus) were named the state's Track and Field Athletes of the Year. Shaver and Northwestern State's Mike Heimerman shared Coach of the Year honors. LSU's Semoy Hackett and Jasmine Stowers were named Newcomer and Freshman of the Year, respectively.
