2011 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship Results

NATCHITOCHES, La. -
Three event champions, five all-conference performances and three school records added up to the best finish in school history as the Nicholls State University women's track and field team racked up 64 points for a sixth place finish as the 2011 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships came to an end on Sunday at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La.

After senior high jumper Chelsea Dockrey took home first place in the high jump with a school record performance of 1.76 m on Friday, and senior distance runner Kadi Whisnant added a championship in the 3K steeplechase on Saturday, junior sprinter Samantha Calhoun gave the Colonels their third championship of the weekend on Sunday.

Calhoun clocked in at 11.60 in the 100 M, cruising to victory by a full tenth of a second.  The Morgan City, La. native returned later in the day to take second place in the 200 m.  Calhoun's 200 m time of 23.81 earned her all-conference honors and set a new school record in the event.  Calhoun's 100 M championship and 200 M runner-up showing combined with Dockrey's high jump title, Whisnant's steeplechase win and freshman Jaime Springer's runner-up showing in the javelin to give Nicholls five performances in the top three and earn All-Southland Conference honors.

Calhoun returned to the track one last time, anchoring the Nicholls 4x100 m relay team to a 44.99 showing to net fifth place and four points.

After racking up 36 points through the first two days of the meet, Calhoun and the 4x1 relay team combined to add 22 more points to the cause.  Calhoun was joined in the 100 m by fellow sprinter Katrina Bettard, who clocked in with a time of 12.02 to take seventh place and add two more points.

Nicholls also some more help from their mid-distance crew as senior Jessica McLeod clocked in with a time of 4:40.56 to take sixth in the 1500 and add three points.  Meanwhile, freshman Jackie White managed to score in her first career Southland Conference meet, netting eighth place with a time of 2:19.32.

The Colonels recorded 64 total points and finished seventh, setting new program records for both point totals and team finish at the Southland Conference Championship meet.

Nicholls will now prepare to send its elite athletes to the 2011 NCAA Championship East Preliminaries at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. May 27-29.
